OWNED By H2O!!! HydroLock!!! Todays sad story =(
Happened today on my way to work, I live in downtown Charleston,SC(Right on the coast). Anyhow accosionally when it rains we have slight flooding that lasts for an hour, well its been raining all week. I picked my route to work today by someone else telling me the road wasn't flooded this morning.
Anyhow this particular flooded section of the road I happened to encounter had a heavily travled road w/ no turn offs and a 8" high X 4 ft wide cement barrier seperating the oncoming lane(I COULDN'T TURN AROUND!!!)
The flooded intersection was about 6-8" high on my side of the intersection,(At this time ever car on my side of the road had made it across w/ no problem(No Stranded Cars). I waited for the green light and at the time could think of no way else to get out of the situation except to get to the intersection 1/3 way into the water and turn around, so I began to follow a truck across the intersection(hoping it would plow the water away a little), and all of a sudden a 4" wake CROSSED from the OTHER SIDE of the BARRIER and thats when it happened!!!
I had my fingers on the ignition when everything stopped in my car and I turned it off as quick as I could. I took off my shoes, popped the hood, crawled out the window(the water was 3" up on the door!) and look and saw that the intake filter was completely covered!WHY DID THAT FCKN TRUCK HAVE TO PUSH OVER THE WAKE!?!?
I didn't try to start it again, considering that I was 99% sure it was hydrolocked( I didn't want to make the damage worse by putting more force on the engine), I pushed the car back from the water and I had to wait 4 Hours for AAA to Finally get to me, AAA declared Charleston in a state of emergency becuase they had tons of cars with problems cause by the flood(Some completely submerged).
As the time passed I peered around the intersection and saw an eclipse, probe, lexus, minivan, and bmw all stranded(Hydrolock/engine related) on the other side of the barrier, across the intersection.
Anyhow I got the car to the local shop just before it closed, so they haven't had a chance to look at it, the owner is away for the weekend and won't get to it till Tues.
Before my skunk2 intake manfiold I had a GSR intake w/ a bypass valve, when I got the new manifold I had to get the type-r CAI and I didn't want to lose the hp w/ the bypass valve, so I didn't put the bypass valve on.
This is the second major disaster for me in the past 3months. In May my timing belt, w/ 2900 miles on it, shredded 10 teeth.
WHY ME LORD!!! MESSAGE/POINT OF POST if there is any possibility that you may encounter a flooded situation, either stay w/ a stock intake or get the bypass valve.

The first thing I was wondering when I saw the title was if you had a CAI... I am very sorry to hear about what happened
Greg - who is taking the CAI off for the Comptech Ice Box

Not that you car sucks or anything but I was relived when it wasn't a Type R
Hey, what do you expect when you post it in a Type R forum! Let us know how much it will cost to be fixed!

You might be ok if you turned the engine off in time.
Next time don't even TRY toross water - better to stop the car and leave it where it is. You didn't HAVE to drive forward into the water. Just put your 4 way flashers on an pull to the side of the road.
on you for even trying to drive through that.

Fact being, i think Hydro-locking is one of the most biggest fears for alot of CAI users. Spyderwebab, you've gone through the worst luck with your car, i wish you the best man. Keep us updated and hopefully if you're lucky, nothing is wrong with your car.
No pity here. You saw a big *** puddle and decided to go wading into it.
I always carried my stocker with me when I had a CAI. Then I finally got sick of worrying about it, especially at tracks which don't drain well.

why didn't you unplug cai from the throttle body if you saw that the road was flooded.

The plan was to just go out into the water enough to turn around, the water was low enough that I would have made it, if it were not for the traffic on the otherside of the street that pushed the water over the barrier.Keep in mind though I say heavily traveled STREET, this street has Six lanes and is bumper to bumper for miles. It wasn't just like two or three cars that made it through the flood, it was 40-50 before me.
you can use a penny to loosen it and F
the traffic. They're not going to pay for his engine.
Sorry about your car anyways.

Thats kind of funny about the penny, I didn't have a screwdriver, the keys wouldn't fit, and I actually tried the penny after it happened, the screw on the clamp was too tight to turn though, I didn't have the leverage. Insurance says its more than likely they will cover it, haven't talked to the insurance adjuster yet though, the car was insured with the intake on it, and I had no choice but to try to turn around, AAA wasn't towing anybody that had a running car(State of Emergency, in order to have your car towed, it must be an emergancy.)
That happened to a friend of mine. Ouch I feel for you
Heres what you should do....
Take your car home,
take a blunt object (hammer, rock etc..)
smash in your oil pan
call you insurance company and tell them you hit somthing in the road at night!
My friend got a brand spankin new GSR from acura into his 96 GSR all paid for by his insurance!
Good luck
Alex - Whos always trying to find a way out of paying for stuff

who knows how to convert hex to decimal then octal finally binary
Happened to me during hurricane flyd a few years ago. Although I didn't have to smash my oil pan, insurance still paid for it because it was considered water damage. I wish you luck.
Your car may run fine even though you comprimized the integrigty of the connecting rod. It may not fail until a few months later. (like me)
Luckily the insurance claims person knew about the effects of hydrolock.
Good luck!

Maybe if he was busting out with some DSP or talking about some interference crap...
am I missing something?
Here is my problem. I am trying to take my bypass valve off of my GSR. We get almost no rain here. The owner before me put it in. I am not sure if the CAI is the 1 peice or 2 piece design. If it is the 2 piece do you just take the bypass out? Any way to put together a 1 piece again?
The reason why I want to do this is because the bypass valve muffle the sound a TON compared to my friends with CAI on any other car.
