Default 96 cx to v-tec, not sure if v-tec is worken

ihave put a d16y8 head on my d16y7 block, it only had 60000 miles so i figured i'd give it a try a lil at a time, well i only put the head on, no exhaust, intake, injectors, just the head, i tryed computer but it didn't wanna run right, so i put old one back and wired v-tec solenoid to 12 volts, if i do it while idling it sometimes wants to stall, so i figured it's worken, but at higher rpms, if i give it 12 volts, it does nothen at all, i can't hear nothen change and no extra power at all, none whatsoever, i think there's more power now from the head change though, i know i can feel a difference but i would just like to know if i'm gonna feel a change at all or not, i would not like to waste anymore money i don't have tryen to get this to work if it's not going to, thanx

well you should be able to hear the motor's pitch change, although its not that different like it is on B and K series.
And you will make more power than a stock Y7 because your compression is now in the 10's area instead of 9.4:1.

y8 has weak vtec to begin with. I've had a lot of y8s there is no noticeable difference when vtec kicks in. h22 throws you in the seat when it kicks in and b16a2 there is a pretty big difference as well. not the y8s though... although they are one of my favorite motors.

This is true, there is almost no difference when the Y8 kicks VTEC. Although if it doesnt kick VTEC its noticable that the motor is loosing power.
