Default Toyota FT-86 - The New Type R?

I haven't seen any post here about this, but am curious what ITR owners think about the upcoming FT-86 from Toyota. It looks like a front engine, rear drive, 180hp flat 4 at 2600 lbs.

I'm interested in it as Honda seems to think that fun is a hybrid hatch with a six speed manual trans... Your thoughts?

and, to make this Type R related:
Per Edmunds http://www.insideline.com/subaru/toy...the-works.html
"Surprisingly, the joint Toyota-Subaru R&D team has chosen the out-of-production, front-wheel-drive Honda Integra Type R as its benchmark, because its styling, performance parameters and dimensions mirror what the development team wants to create."

More info and pics...

That's not a bad looking car, almost makes me think of an Eclipse though

That orange was a photoshop. Not even an official concept design.

Seems like they could have picked a better engine.

I like the theory of the lower CG due to a boxer engine, but the ability to work on the motor takes a huge hit.

It is not very common to see N/A Subaru motors, I wonder what they are capable of. I would assume the 2.5 motors would be a popular swap for this application.

Its just Toyota's poor attempt to be in the sports car market by using Subaru's technology. Toyota never develops their own technology, they always have to either copy it or buy it. God I hate Toyota's!

Note: the poor attempt to revive the "Hachi-Roku" name icon. Toyota can never be the Toyota they were in the 80's and early 90's; they are just another big corporation ran by financial bean counters like M$.

what's so ridiculous about it? Its true. Toyota couldn't develop their own sports car engine, so they hired Yamaha to do it and the subsequently bought a 25% share in Yamaha. If you don't believe me, if you own a Toyota, look on the engine block. Chances are you'll see "YAMAHA" stamped on it somewhere.

Now they want to develop a car with a boxer engine so they buy Subaru.

In the motorsports world they hired engineers from Ferrari to help them develop they're F1 car and were caught. The two engineers were banned for espionage.

I can go on forever about how much they copy other company's stuff, but I think I already made a thread about this before.

This is not new news, especially in here in Japan. Toyota are a bunch of bean counting copy cats who can't produce any but xeroxed or cookie cutter cars.

There is another thread here on HT about this, and Subaru actually looks like its going to be producing this in some capacity. I haven't read the article in depth but that is what I gather.

Sure...The "sub 20g price tag" is nice. But, let's wait to see what the "revised version of the naturally aspirated boxer 2.0-liter unit generating around 220 horsepower at 6,500 rpm, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox from the current Impreza WRX STI." look like. it could well be a RWD Sillyca.

Oh yea it does! The joint Toyota and Subaru team is using the ITR as a benchmark to develope the "FT-86".

Which makes absolutely no sense.... Why would you benchmark a rwd car after a fwd car.....

what good could possibly come from that, black seats w/ red stitching ?

Sure it makes sense... What do Type Rs and Elises/Exiges have in common? It's not FWD/RWD. It's not price... They are all drivers cars. The Type R and Elises are light and relatively low powered, but are phenomonal car to drive in the own right.

Hopefully that is what Toyota is going after with the R as a benchmark. Seeing as they are tuning it on nurburgring, I think they're headed in the right direction.
