Default DC2 Quarter Panel Repair

so i picked up a teg with previous fiberglass work done to it, and obv it was a 1/10 job and the rust came back. I had to cut everything out (not fun) and the passenger side still got bondo all over it. Shortly i'll be doing a diy on some bodywork involving refabricating sheetmetal for the complete wheelwell & QP on this teg and also fabricating a fatter lip on the Qp's to give it a bold look. Car is already at my shop as of yesturday and should start the job early next week! )

Looks like a lot of work...good luck with it!

By the way, if you use photobucket you can rotate your pictures.

is this your first quarter job? if it is, props for diving into one hell of a mess. i myself have to do this to my own dc and im not looking forward to it.

the bottom of the quarter directly in front of the tire has more of a curve then your metal patch has. also, the wheel well could be more curved. you want to do the best you can with your metal patch so your not trying to make up for it being mis-shapen, with body filler. are you covering it with fiberglass filler? short strand filler is waterproof and wont soak up moisture like body filler will. not sure if you knew that or not so i threw that out there.

props for using metal though. good work so far.

looks like he is using duraglass, could be wrong tho. IMO duraglass is the best thing to use on rust repair after you weld/glue a patch on. i always add more fiberglass resin to it. it doesnt soak up water like bondo does.

No its welded only the big gaps i put some duraglass indeed. I hate bondo with a passion and even refuse to use their mixing tools.

The most ideal way of doing a job like this is shaping one complete peice to get the curve to match. I had no time so i used several layers but i have an idea of what im going to do to shape it out nicely.. doing the prep work today or tomorrow will keep you guys posted.

patches look pretty good .

It would be nice if rustrepair.com or fixmyrust.com made patches for Integra's . save alot of time and less bondo needed !!

So finally got a day where it wasn't too busy so i started prepping the teg. Two quarter panels, two doors, fender, trunk, bumper. Started off by grinding it down

Taking pics in the shop isn't the neatest thing

Filled with superglass

Cheesed, grinded / sanded with 40

Mixing lightweight filler

Filled / sanded

Some evercoat rage / filler at this stage i think

Another area being assesed. (TYK previous owner fiberglassed it. ;()
Word of advice, if you're shaving side mold's
please do not fiberglass matt it. Simply sink it with a dolly and fill it with
glass filler.

Grinded, sinked holes and filled with superglass.

Fender slightly was damaged/bubbling so might as well take care of that now.

Another side sinked and filled as well.

Trunk holes were also fg matted, lol, so same procedure. Grinded, sinked,
filled.

Fender

Getting there, putty with some filler

Sanded the glass, put lightweight filler over, sanded.

Fixing some high spots.

chessed / grinded ( ran out of 40 grit ) / sanded

Lightweight filler, almost there

Hmm

Some of the tools ^_^

Some more minor highspots filled, then putty then 320 sanded ready for primer.

Blowing the car from dust --> My man eran

Quick masking job..

Blah..

b4..

primed..

Thats it for the day, will sand tomorow maybe one more time prime it, watersand and ready for paint! YESSSIR! hope you enjoyed. Feel Free
to ask questions.

Default Re: DC2 Quarter Panel Repair PAINT ready

sanded primer, primed again...

Machined with 320.

Started water sanding.. with 600 over everything with the exeption of the uper quarter panel trim, and of the two fenders with 2000 since its only being blended. (clear coat only).

Turned out the kid partially painted the bumper with a spraycan before and didn't even clear it lol ... Going to repaint the whole bumper now..

Sanded...

Washed, thinned inner trims of oversprayed primer, will mask the car tomorrow and shoot it friday or early saturday.

This was a fun project, but, shows how a small job can go far. If you don't know much about bodywork, you will, in the end pay someone else not to only finish the initial damage but cleaning the mess of your work

Will give you guys the paint tips and which paint / clear / gun im using when i spray it.

well it doesnt look like it was done with galvanized steel, and it doesnt look like he treated the welds behind the panels at all, so its just gona rust again from the back side of the panel.

i would have used some rust mort behind the quarter, its cheap insurance that the rust doesnt take control again. It only takes 0.006 of a square in for the rust to reappear

How do you know this? are you a body tech? I've seen this done and its never rusted from the under side. Its true it is a fifty fifty chance it might show up again depending on how well he primer and color the whole underside and top along with his body work. I've even done it myself buy not on my hatch. Yeah but you are right so I'm giving the guy his other alternative since he doesn't have access to a MIG welder.
