i have a 1998 honda civic hatchback and i want to convert my climate control to the 99-00 style, what do i need to take from the 99-00 civic and modify to make my a/c and everything else work in my 1998?

pretty much everything, heater core etc.
check the faqs, i think there is a diy for this in there.

 

Yea the 96-98 are manual but the 99-00 are electronic, so you will need quite a few things
