Default i have a gun and compressor. now what?

what else do I need to throw down some paint?

i haven't done this before so I am trying to learn. I think i need a regulator with vapor separator? anything else?

pics and links… anything would help.

i plan to lay down some single stage paint over my rear quarters and maybe a new coat of clear over the crappy CF hood.

Did you prep your parts already? Sand/ Primer where applicable?

i have been doing a lot of research on the prep side of this, but i don't see much information about the hard equipment used.

I do have the parts, but the weather here (Kansas City) isn't the best at the moment, so I am trying to get my "shopping list" put together.

this will be done in my garage. i plan on hanging sheets up (i've heard getting the sheets wet first helps keep the dust down) and using some fans to create a "vacuum of sorts by blowing air out.

my compressor lets me adjust the operating air pressure. is this enough?

how big of a compressor do you have? I'd practice on some spare parts first before actually painting your CF hood....You can get some paint usually for about $15 give or take at any paint store. Also having an air/water separator helps out...When adjusting the air flow, use your gun, not the actual compressor. I usually spray around 32-35psi

As for getting the sheets wet, it'd actually be better to have the ground wet. Maybe having the sheets a little damp might help, but you don't want to risk water dripping onto your car. I've never actually heard of someone spraying with damp sheets hanging.

I have a 26 gallon 6 cfm @ 40psi

i definately will plan on practicing. (prob pick up a fender or door from the junkyard.

on the hood I am only reclearing. the rear quarters will get paint.

good call on the floor.

is this the type of seperator you recommend?

that'll probably work fine for your compressor since it's only 26 gallons. You should also pick up one of these http://www.tooltopia.com/ProductImag...1/JLM121CJ.jpg they're usually just a couple of dollars from a paint store and they attach to your paint gun.

All you need is practice... Thats it

Also look for an honest paint shop that will sell you what you need, esp if you dont know what your buying or doing.

That is not going to cut it for long if you are shooting automotive paint, but you can certainly practice and see how it works out. Mine is 18.1 cfm @ 90psi and it is adequate for auto paint...

It depends on what you are spraying.
His compressor will work in small bursts, so if you are painting small items it would work.
If you plan on painting large items, such as a car, no, it will not suffice.

i just came across this gun:

http://www.eastwood.com/ew-concours-...metal-cup.html

it is made for "home compressor use" 4cfm at 29psi since I am far from a professional painter do you guys think it will work?

It will work fine, providing you clean it completely after every use...talkin not one spec of paint anywhere on it. If your only going to be using that gun for your car it will be fine. However stick with the 1.2mm tip, lays out base really nice. I have a Sata RP Digital with a 1.2mm tip and it lays clear out really nice as well. So try it out on a test panel (old hood or something, get your technique down and get used to the gun) and see what you think.

Btw, yes definately hang poly around your garage, but id advise not soaking the plastic...air pressure hitting it can cause the water to come off of it and onto your car. In a booth its a different story. Wet the floor, not the plastic. The overspray will stick to the poly anyway. Go get some Sharkskin poly, works wonders. As stated before if your painting your car with that compressor, its going to **** you off. You'll starve for air and constantly have to wait for it to pressure back up.

As for air flow in the garage for venting....good luck, put a fan in the man-door, thats about it. Having a regulator off the compressor is a must, and those rubber seperators that screw on the end of the gun dont work for **** so dont waste your money.

Basic material list minus paint:
-latex gloves
-paint suit
-respirator
-tack cloth
-fast evaporating cleaner
-paper towel (cheaper than the lint free wiping cloths)
-gun wash (thinner)

That will get you going in the right direction anyway..

i currently have a binks model 63 (or 62 I'll have to double check) – (an older gun with the cup below the nozzle)

here is a link to the required CFM per material, from what I can figure out I need 8-10 cfm at 30psi?
