Default Broken Differential. Why?.... pics inside

I believe the trans code is s4c. Hydro trans. out of a 99 civic si. It shifts fine, no grinds, no noise.. I heard some grinding noise one day about 5 months ago but it went away so I didn't think much of it after that.

I pulled the trans to do a clutch job and noticed metal chucks behind one of the axle seals. Tore trans apart and found this.

In these pics you can see where pieces of metal have gouged the case and the ribs are broken off.

What would cause this? Why would those 2 gears strip like that? This is a daily driver, never been to the track and it's been driving perfectly.
Oh, and anyone got a spare stock diff they want to sell? lol

I have been having some vibration problems only during acceleration 1st-3rd gears only. Could not get it to do this up on a lift. I made a thread about this but got no responses.

I was thinking my vibration problems are due to a bad intermediate shaft bearing or axle but now I don't know what to think.

well you should be able to clean up that tranny and swap in a LSD with no problems.. Thats what i plan to do... I could tell with it up on jackstands. Id put it in a gear and turn a wheel and you could feel it bind up and you could obviously see the other wheel not move at all up untill a certain point then it would catch and lock up

Are you the original owner of the car? Trans VIN match car VIN?

Looks like a long burnout was performed. Diff pin got hot which means the spider gears got hot.

Unfortunately no. I put the swap in the car and the swap had 110,000 miles on it. I changed the MTF a few months ago and everything looked normal. The fluid I just drained out is silver. So it happened sometime is the past few months. I daily drive the car and have never done a burnout or even been to the track. Im sure the previous owner did though..

B16 trans has too many issues with small diff, weaker synchros anyway

I would find a B18C1/5 trans and upgrade -- better/stronger trans and FD (JDM)

Sorry the diff grenaded though....I hate trans problems.

The next build I do will be from ground up...starting with a B18C1/5 case, MF gears, carbon synchros, MF FD, LSD

When its off/breaks...its asking for an upgrade IMO

B16 and B18C use the same synchro's...

Open B18C diff isn't any stronger than the B16A.

Ground up builds are nice.

JDM 96 ITR case and mainshaft
New OEM 2nd and 1-5/R hubs/sliders/synchros
MFactory helical LSD, 1st, close gear set, FD
