I need to know what is wrong with my timing belt, well actually it doesnt seem like the car is running weird in any way but the timing belt looks visibly loose. Its kinda scary cuz the timing belt covers are gone so im just hoping there isnt a possibility of the belt slipping off. Is it the tensioner? Need different belt? Something else? I dont know what belt that is (ls,gsr etc) because I wasnt the one who built the motor.

Can you guys help me out, is it a problem? What should i do?

 

first off dont start the car again if the belt is loose it could jump timing and bend every valve in the head. did u looosen the bolt for the tensioner tham pry up on it than lock it down to get the belt tight? if not try that u should only be able to turn the belt 90 degrees if there is good tension. hope this helps

 

thanks i will see if that works, the motor is out and is going to be put in soon so i can do it with it out easier right? im a noob when it comes to working on motors so ill have a friend help me and ill report back once we try. thanks again

 

no prob its alot easier to do it with the motor out just put a pry bar on the loosened tensioner and u should be good

 

aww man I have an LS/Vtec also my car does the same thing except it only happens when The car warms up. You can hear this sort of slapping sound idk if its the belt or what I'm pretty sure its the belt cuz I popped my hood and that was where it seemed to come from...

 

u using gsr timing belt and water pump the number of teeth are different...

 

are you telling me based on the looseness or you asking?

 

Im pretty sure what hes trying to say is the teeth on the LS water pump are different and if your using a GSR timing belt it wont be tight.

Was the water pump changed to GSR? who built the motor?



You should only be able to turn your timing belt 90*. if its any looser/more than that id suggest looking into getting it fixed.

 

what im saying is im pretty sure your suppose to use a gsr water pump and timing belt, from what i have heard there is a difference of a couple teeth on the belt and water pump can anyone verify thats true? did u have any luck tightening the belt u got on there now?
