LSD question
I bought a used gear type LSD out of a broken B Hydro trans, but don't know what brand it is. The ring gear is part of the carrier and is not removable. The unit also would not fit the LS clutch housing without breaking off some case ribs(the guy who installed it did this, and I didn't find out until I took it apart). Is the LS clutch housing different than the rest of the B series? And who makes this LSD with a non removable ring gear?

thats right, but I got no response. The title was misspelled and I couldn't edit. Also maybe to many questions at once? So I thought I'd try them a couple at a time, the easy ones first.
Go back and read my reply.
We needs pics. I answered your question about the final drive (mixing CS and RG).
I am a trans expert, get pics and I can help. Until then it doesn't look like anyone else is even wanting to touch this.

Went back and looked at all 3 threads I posted in. Didn't find anything but the ATF remark.
So, is there a difference between the 15 tooth gear on the LS counter shaft, and the 15 tooth gear on the B-16 shaft? If so, do you know what it is? Maybe tooth thickness?
By the way, I just found the source of the gear noise I was having with it, by sticking the CVs in the diff and grabbing them with my hands to put some load on the tranny while turning it in the lathe. The noise got much louder and matched the frequency of the diff speed, one for one. I took it apart and looked close at the ring gear teeth and found several were cracked with an odd wear pattern. The crook that put it in has disappeared long since. I also realized at that point, that he stole the Helical diff that I gave him to install and switched it with this other no-name brand with a 14 bolt ring gear and cracked teeth. The one I gave him had no bolts; it was solid; one piece. very strange to me. Anyway, I think I will throw this mess in the corner and get a decent box from a reputable source this time.
I want a good quality 4.4 or 4.26 helical diff, LS 5th gears, good synchro assemblies and gears, and a case that doesn't need to be buggered to fit the LSD. (Mini wheels are only 10" tall, so the tall gears). How should I go about getting that all together? I have the LS 5th gears already and if I can find a ring gear to fit this LSD I have, that would help. Should I start with a GSR or a LSD CTR box with the 4.40s, and get rid of the LSD I have.
I know......Pics. Don't know how to post them on this board. I moderate a section on another forum, where my engine conversion kit is hosted, if that would help. www.vtecminis.com. under alexander/ramco subframes. if so I can post some gear pics in my gallery there.
Thanks

Yes, there is a difference and that is the entire design. LS hydro is 4.266 and B16 hydro is 4.40 so you can't mix them (do not mix used gear sets even if they are the same ratio).
You won't find anything for the 14 bolt diff. The OEM viscous LSD's use 14 bolts, everything else uses 10, so the only FD's that will fit are the FD's that come in the non ITR/CTR with OEM LSD. There is a better solution though.
PM or email me about what you need (parts and from the trans itself (top speeds, etc). You've got me interested with it being a Mini. whoopeedooracing@aol.com

Good, here are some pics of the diff with the cracked ring gear teeth. and one of the hacked case. The first pic shows the numbers on the diff cover. Do you know what make it is?
So a OEM GSR or b-16 LSD gear set will fit??? How about the Mfactory 14 bolt gear set? they have a 4.05 I think. Then I could get another clutch housing that will fit that LSD. anything else??

The Mfactory 4.05s and LS 5th gears (.714s) would give me an overall ratio of 2.90 which will give me a highway cruise RPM of 3500RPM at 70 MPH with my 19" tall street tires; A little higher RPM with 18" tall RR slicks. that's about 140 MPH at 7,500 RPM on the slicks. I doubt it will go that fast though.
That's an oem 14-Bolt Viscous LSD you have. Nothing aftermarket will fit that.
If you want to use an aftermarket final drive (such as our 4.05), you will need either an open diff, or a 10-bolt LSD (i.e ITR LSD, or Aftermarket)

As already mentioned, there are no aftermarket final drives that will work the the 14 bolt diffs.
You're about spot on with top speed. Mini's are drag limited regarding top speed.

I don't know what a Viscous diff is but I took this one apart and there is nothing but helical gears inside, That would make it a Helical LSD, would it not? Also, the guy at Mfactory told me on the phone, that they had both 10 bolt and 14 bolt gears.
He said they do, when I asked him. I will call again.
So, if they don't , what do I need to get my car back up and running, with a tall geared, LSD tranny in it. considering what I have to work with is:
(1) LS tranny with broken off case ribs, OEM diff with bad ring gear, and bad 3rd gear assembly.
(1) cable b-16 tranny with open diff and worse 3rd gear assembly?
It has been two weeks and I need to get this thing done.
Thanks

I'm an MFactory dealer and the North American Installer, I can assure you they don't.
The ribs are not for strength, but for oiling purposes.
Unless you want to source a new OEM 14 bolt ring gear, you'll need to get either an OEM 10 bolt diff or an aftermarket diff.
I suggest a new clutch housing. If you only replace the housing (versus getting a whole case) you'll need to reshim the mainshaft which requires special tools.
The cable B16 internals won't work in a hydro trans. If the 3rd gear set itself is bad, replace it. If the hub/slider are bad, replace the sleeve set.
Are you going to be doing this yourself or have someone else build it for you?

Never had much luck having work done for me. I almost always get screwed, and have to re do everything myself. This last time I gave the guy an LS tranny with a bad 3rd, an LSD in good condition, and a whole hydro b-16 tranny internals with good gears for parts. two years later, I finally got my LS trans back in exchange for building the piping for a turbo system on his CRX. When I recently took it apart,I found the trans had a different (Viscous) LSD (with cracked ring gear),than the one I gave him to install; the 3rd gear and Synchro assembly was not replaced with the good ones I gave him; the case was butchered for the 14 bolt LSD to fit, and the parts trans was missing. Basically I lost everything. Only consolation is he never picked up his CRX with the turbo system I built. so I sold it for 450$ and I still have the car with b-16 and cable trans in it that doesn't shift. If I can get 700$ for the car, I will be ok.
I have a machine shop and all the necessary tools. The tranny is actually pretty simple to assemble compared to the V8 4 and 5 speeds I am used to, I can do the shims,no problem.
I am just unclear, at this point, what would be the cheapest way to get a High geared, LSD trans together, considering the parts I already have.
BTW, my Mini will be used for road racing, and has a short wheel base, so the Diff type that I use, needs to work very well in that scenario.

I would run a clutch type LSD. It will make turn in easier with the short wheel base. Not the cheapest route though.
If the cable trans you're going to use is a 90-91 that limits what you can do with the FD. Not sure about other brands, but the only FD that MFactory makes for the 90-91 cable trans is a 4.928, definitely not what you want. If its a 92-93 trans then you can use the MFactory 4.05 FD. Other than that it would be a custom Houseman $1,500+ FD.

Look into the diff. If you can see all the way through its an LSD (or a broken open diff, but you should be able to see part of the diff pin if it broke). If you see a diff pin (will look like a rod) its an open diff.
