Got my new-to-me '92 Accord winter car! In need of clutch
Hey guys,
I needed a replacement winter/bad weather car so I have been looking for a 4th Gen Accord for some time now. My Prelude has seen better days, so I think I need to park it and slowly repair all the issues at my leisure. I figured it would be best to jump into an Accord again as a beater, especially since many of the parts are interchangeable between both cars.
Shifting the tranny with the engine off seems to be ok. Clutch pedal feel is not the greatest. Weird thing is when the car is idling and the clutch pedal is pushed in, it's fine....but if I let out the clutch pedal....still being in neutral....the car grabs and stalls.
I am 97% sure the clutch is done. The guy who sold it to me said the shop told him it needs a new tranny. He said his car was driving fine and then all of the sudden this happened. Can't imagine the tranny would fail that quickly. I've seen bad clutches do some weird things. When I bought my Prelude, I would get locked IN gear while driving. I will start tearing into it this weekend.
It's a navy blue '92 sedan 5 spd. The interior needs some cleaning and it needs the two climate control *****!!! lol The paint is faded, and it has the common Honda rot in the rear wheel wells. I hope she can get me through the bad weather/Winter months just fine after the clutch replacement. I'm going to keep it as stock as I can, but when it does need tires, I will put on my spare 94-96 Prelude sawblade OEM wheels to spurce it up. I have Sylvania Silverstar bulbs to go in ASAP, too.
Anyway, I am part of the Accord family again! I've had a hand-me-down '86 Accord LX, as well as a brand new '96 Accord LX I bought in Oct '95. I hope this one is as good as the other ones I owned!

It sounds (if I'm understanding correctly) like the tranny appears to be selecting two (2) gear ranges at the same time - thus the lock-up and stall.
If it were truely in neutral, you'd be able to engage/disengage the clutch with impunity.

I'd check the shift control cables for damage.

I got into my car to test the shifting out. It didn't feel like it was shifting like it should. Noticeably sloppy.
So you think I should check the shifter cables?
That happen to me after I assemble back the F tranny onto my H. Car would stall even if I have the pedal down and in gear. Found nothing, I guess the clutch got pressured by the input shaft which won't release the clutch disc at all, so thats my story. Your's may be something else though.
It's funny you say that. After I posted this, I was thinking about why the car would stall like that even if the car was truely in neutral.

The lengths of the cable(s) can change if the crimped-on metal ends should slide off the plastic shieth, effecting the shift lever positions.
I'd check both ends; both the transmission and shifter ends.

I just got back from the car. Shifting through the gears with the engine off is sloppy. Originally, I thought maybe that was how it should feel since I am used to the Forbidden SSK in my Prelude. I also took out the rubber bushings on my shifter plate in my Prelude.
The weather is bad right now (rainy and somewhat cold) but I will try messing with the cables tomorrow.
That would be AWESOME if the issue is something easy to fix!
Any other ideas?
EDIT: Thanks for the help, P!!
