Default Une piece LSD?

It's a long story that starts of with installing an LSD in my LS tranny. I bought a used LSD out of a broken hydro tranny. It is a gear type, tapered roller brgs, with no names or numbers on it. The ring gear is not removable, but all one piece with the carrier!!!!. So I could not install my tall geared LS ring on the carrier. Does anybody know what this is? So I had to use the 4.4 ring that was machined into it; not as tall as I wanted but still do-able.
Next, I had someone that I should not have trusted, install it. using my LS main and countershafts. The LS diff was a 4.26 ratio and the LSD was a 4.4, but the tooth count on my LS shaft was the same as the one from the LSD tranny; 15, so I assumed it would be ok to use my LS shaft, even though the ring gear tooth counts were different, Am I wrong?
I installed the tranny with b-16 engine, in my project car and half way round the block, it started to sound like gravel in the tranny. I took it apart and found nothing obvious, except that the guy who installed the diff, broke off a bunch of the ribbing in the case to get room for the LSD. Is this normal? Nothing is rubbing though.
Any way, I put it back together and bench tested it at about 700 RPM, using my lathe to spin it. With the trans In neutral, it seems pretty quiet, first gear I can hear a little noise. in 4th and especially 5th it sounds like there is obviously something wrong, an off and on, but not a consistant noise like a few small pebbles getting tossed around inside or a gear not meshing right. I ran it for about an hour to see if it would go away, but it did not change. I had a couple quarts of ATF in it with about a quart of solvent, to clean it out and keep it cool. I do not want to put it back in the car making noise. It is much smaller than a Honda, and there is no room to work. It takes two days to get it in or out; subframe, intake manifold, header, clutch cylinder, engine and suspension, even the dash, all have to come out. I will have to buy another tranny if I can't get this one working.
To recap questions:
Non removable ring gear?
LSD brand/type?
Hacking the case for clearance?
will the same shaft gear work on ring gears with different tooth counts?
how much back-lash should the ring gear have?
What could be causing the intermitant clicking, grinding noises?
How do you tell if a bearing is bad? They all seem tight and smooth.
One more thing, Nothing is pressed on. Turn the main shaft upside down and everything on it falls off. Is this normal? The shaft mics out within spec. but the Synchro hub splines look a little pounded.
Thanks for your help. I am looking at some Craigs list trannys tomorrow, so sooner the better.

Don't put ATF in a manual trans, ever.

Don't have a cow. ATF WORKS GREAT FOR FLUSHING OUT TRANNYS AND REAR ENDS. I was just using it on the lathe while spinning at idle speed with no load. If I put it back in the car, it will be torn down again first. I could run water and peanut butter in it for that long without causing a problem. As a mater of fact, I ran a transfer case that I filled with water through the Mexican desert, for several hundred miles in an emergency once, no problem. I am 63 years old, a mechanical engineer, and have been building non-Honda engines, trannys and rear ends all my life, This is my first time with anything japaneese, at least on 4 wheels, (the car is British, and needs a better quality drivetrain.), and I was hoping for a little help from an experienced Honda tranny expert, and you couldn't even answer one of my questions. I held off on buying another tranny today, hoping to get a little helpful input from this forum. Is there anybody here that knows Honda transaxles?
