Default when to give up

you all have been very helpful the past few years. I feel bad that i've never been able to provide much in return.

I have a 92 civic ex four door 5-speed. I like this car very much but keep running into problems.
There is this insane unidentifiable noise from up front that no one can figure out. I've replaced the upper and lower ball joints and tie rod ends. My latest trip to the mechanic told me that bushing are bad all around which could be the source of this sound thats not always there. He offered to do them for 800 dollars.
The bushing are all bad if not completely gone. I'm some what confident that i can spend 3-4 days working on this with some friends and get it done a lot cheaper.
The car however looks real bad. Theres a lot of rust along the back wheel wells and all around underneath the car. There are a few soft spots on the floor. I can poke the carpeting from underneath the car. Theres almost 200K on this thing. This is a mid western salt and snow car that i need to make my income. Should i give up? All i could really afford is another 1000 dollar piece of junk. Unless i take out a loan and buy myself my first car less than 10 years old. I could buy myself an 02 civic and go into debt, or dumb more money into this rusted out piece of junk.

Bushings take like 40 hours to do.and you will need a press/vice/sockets. Check on craigslist for shells. Lots of times you can find a shell thats in better condition than your car, you just gotta strip all the good parts off of your car and put them in the new car. I would much rather go this route than replace every bushing.

A shell wouldn't be a bad idea.

But honestly, if you only have around 1000 to spend on something else, you really won't be getting anything else any better than what you have. Might as well attempt to make a weekend project with your friends and replace the bad bushings.

If you aren't comfortable putting yourself into debt like that, then I would just work with what you have.

Dude you can rent a shop press or buy one "$100 or less" and buy a master bushing set for under $100 as well and have the **** done in less than a day... 40 hours bro, are you serious..!! I did my front and rear bushings in about 4-5 hours... The hardest part is gettin everything off the car...

Save your money and work on that car, try to fix everything yourself. Mechanics are a waste of money, you'll figure stuff out eventually.

Go at it slowly... Make a list of all u need and tackle it one at time..
Might take a little but that's the best route... But swapping shells is not a bad idea... Keep ur eyes open

This "noise" could possible be wheel bearings?? Can you describe this noise in detail?

?
Started doing mine this week...
Blow torch, sockets, BFH and hacksaw

Burn the bushing with the blow torch
Cut a slit in the bushing ring with the hacksaw
Put a socket over the bushing ring
Slam the BFH on the socket and watch the bushing ring come out.

When to give up?
Since when is giving up an option?

I understand your sentiments man. Really, the only person that can answer your question is you. Do you like your car enough to run another weekend project or are you ready to move on...

My opinion (if it were my car), I would fix my car because I plan on keeping her for a long time. But I like my car a lot (even if it isn't as impressive as a lot of people in this forum).
