Last night my check engine light came on. Took it to AutoZone and got a code -P0401 for either a Blocked EGR Passage in engine or Faulty EGR Valve. The Autozoner told me to just put some fuel system cleaner in my 99 Prelude for about a week and it should clear up. Either that or take it off and clean or something.

Do you guys agree with this or is there a better ay to handle this? Thanks!!

 

I would take it off and see if its all plugged up. if it is a little seafoam on it, let it saok a min or two and you should be fine. if you egr is faulty, i have one id be willing to give you. just cover shipping. not worth anything to me.
also have a free h23 crank and oil pump etc, if anyone wants them. the crank may not be repairable, its scared a bit.

P0401 is EGR system low flow and P1491 is EGR valve low lift. If you didn't get a P1491, then you don't need to replace the valve; just clean the carbon crud out of it with a brush, a pick, and some carb cleaner. If you have a P0401, you'll need to drill out the six EGR port plugs in the intake manifold to clean out the ports and install new plugs - it's the same procedure as required for '90-93 Accords (details here and in Honda TSB #98-074 here). It's not difficult, just time-consuming. Seafoam is not going to fix it.

AutoZone tells you that you need fuel system cleaner because they know nothing about fixing Honda cars and they just want to sell you a bunch of **** that you can't return.
