Default JE piston street reliability

trying to settle an argument about this with a friend. NOw I have a friend who has JE pistons in his mr2. It has been about 15,000 miles now and he has serious blow-by, some say caused by the pistons. I started a thread a while ago when I was getting new pistons asking which was best for street/strip. majority said JE. My theory is that JE pistons seem to work better with hondas than say toyota engines. MR2's are a very tempromental car when modified so I say it depends on the car. How many miles are you guys using JE pistons getting out of them, and any problems with them after say 15,000 miles??thanks

I hear 99% good reviews of JE pistons, not sure about MR2 applications though, I know people that have re-built MR2 engines 3-4 times.

this whole debate came up cause when people ask me what pistons I used I say JE they say" plan on doing a rebuild in a year"..take into consideration that these people all own mr2's or dsms..keep coming with the mileage..

this is a damn good thread.

there are a lot of questions about long term reliability with built motors that have never been answered. i know there are a lot of weekend drag racers who dont care about 20k+ miles on their motors (they'll never get there) but there's a lot of us on the streets...

hopefully we can keep this at the top so we can get some answers from people with alot of miles on there JE pistons...

Do you want to use oem rings or je rings?

Umm....JE rings are made by Hastings. Whats the big question about the rings anyhow??

My JE rings were made by Wiseco.
You can't necessarily blame the failure on JE. Most people drive their JE cars extremely hard otherwise they wouldn't have the JE's in the first place. I bet if u put a set of JE's in your grandmother's car, they would go 150K miles.

I got about 12k miles on my motor w/ wiseco pistons, no problems yet.. One of the key problems why people have problems w/ built motors is because they're not properly built. The other big problem is that these motors do see ALOT more hp and are abused alot more than stock blocks..

On another note.. dsm people seem to stay away from JE pistons..? I'm not exactly sure why, but I hear there are some "stories" going around about people that have had problems with them. The dsm crowd seems to usually go with Ross or Venolia(sp?) pistons...

I've had JE pistons in for about a year now with 8k miles on them. No problems so far.

i dont think any aftermarket piston can go over 100k. **** mine blew at 8000. i think if you get 15000k thats alot for forged piston. and if anyone has gone 30000k on there motor without probs and i mean no probs(oil leaks, blow by,etc, etc) let me know please!

To my knowledge the Supra's come with factory forged bottom ends. Also the cast iron blocks help a good bit too.
Anyone want to buy stock supra bottom end??? I know where to get some.... sleeve is cracked though.

well what is different about a forged supra piston vs. a forged JE piston, why can there pistons hold up 200k miles under 750rwhp while no one in a turbo honda can go over 30k miles with 400whp. makes u wonder.

People not taking care of their cars, bum installs, etc. You should be able to go very, very far on forged pistons. If these things only go 3000 miles or whatever you might as well use stock.

i woudl like to know about the silicon content in the JE pistons vs the supra or other OEM forged pistons. i think this directly drives the coeffecient of thermal expansion of the pistons and that might affect their life span (number of thermal cycles).

sorry guys when i am at work i start tossing the big words mumbo jumbo its just a habit.

I believe JE's are low silicon, thus they expand alot under heat. This means high piston to wall clearances, which will beat the hell out of your block while it's cold. So a street driven engine with it's very high frequency of heat cycling will be extremely hard on the block.

I know Arias has high silicon pistons, while I bet factory forged pistons are as well. I do believe lower silicon does make the pistons somewhat more resistant to high EGT's and detonation though.
