Default Transmission choice

what transmission are you guys using for your street driven drag cars? question is mostly for the guys who are making more than 450whp, I just finished building a b20/vtec motor with golden eagle sleeves, garrett t67HO turbo street(autobahn) tuned at 21 psi on E85, tuned it saturday night right after break in. don't know how much power I am making but its fast as hell.
transmission is a s4c b16 tranny, with mfactory lsd, syncrotech 3rd-5th gear carbon synchros, ls 5th gear , competition twin disc. same tranny was in my 2.0l ls/vtec ran 11's on a bad launch, missed 3rd, while shifting early.

on sunday I was driving on the autobahn decided to do a pull from 3rd through 5fth, after slowing down and down shifting my 4th gear was gone, drove the car to my friends shop and check the linkage, shifter bolt was loose, fix it, but still no 4th, drove the car some more at nornal speed of around 120mph (yes thats normal speeds on the autobahn) then it pops out of 5th, never got it back in. had to call ADAC (AAA) to tow me home 300 away from home because if your car cannot maintan 60mph on the autobahn you will get a ticket.

now am looking to rebuild and want to know what options are out there for transmission that sees a lot of power.

For a street car I would use an MFactory synchro engagement gearset. We have had really good luck with the B series stuff in street cars. The gears are well made and affordable and will easily handle that power.

im going with mfactory. Ive heard nothing but good things about all their gear sets. I know Jake blackman has had alot of passes (I believe a good bit over 50) on his dog set and no issues. for the money mfactory is hard to beat too.
With that amount of horsepower though you shouldnt really need to upgrade the gears, alot of people(sfwd mostly) run stock trans into the 700whp area and get a pretty good life out of the transmission. I say rebuild it with stock stuff but if you have the extra money the mfactory synchro setup sounds perfect for what you are looking to do.

I wouldn't blame my tranny destruction on driving skills, but the harsh engagement of an unsprung twin plate clutch on more than stock power, may have done it.

A Tilton Flow control Valve willhelp the harsh engagent. Run the smallest pill that comes with it.

We use the b16 si and b18c gsr on the street and the strip with cars making 700hp+. Most of our cars have competition and exedy twin disc chutch. WE have had issues with final drives and gears after alot of abuse.

Just have to adapt to braided with -3 ends on either side so that you can put it inline with the clutch slave cylinder.... It really helps with the increased shock loading from the twin. TRUST me you know the issues I was having in the Accord blowing up tranny after tranny... Even th straight cut set once.... ALL is gravvvvyyyy now :O)

a little pricey for a check valve, but a tranny cost more so I guess I'll be getting one.

if the tranny weighs 70lbs or less after package, I would be happy to by it and you could ship it to APO, but since it don't shipping will cost more than buying the mfactory gears.

i also have a twin unsprung & to me dumping it on the street isnt doing anything but breaking the tires loose & hurting the trans. dont kill it on the shifts on the street & just pedal the traction in & u will almost always win if u got the power.

once i got my twin i was beating down manny 9sec V8s on the street. didnt catch them till about 100mph but i got them. twin is the only way to go.

we tried that flow controll valve in our rwd bug & didnt like it caused to much slipping even on the biggest jet. probably good for a fwd car though being we dont deadhook anyways.

yeah I am thinking I will just keep the car off the streets, and trailor it to the track, I kinda like the harsh engagement especially on slicks.
