Default transmission choice

i need advice on the transmission that i should go with. i have an lsv that is going into my dirt track car and i need to decide what tanny i need to get. i want the rpm's to be around 7000 to 7500 in 2nd gear between 50-55mph. so my question is, what tranny can i go with that will land me closest to these numbers? any input would be greatly appreciated. maybe those with a lsv can see what their car is turning at these speeds and let me know the numbers and the tranny set up they have? my guess is that the competition will be between the b16 tranny and the gsr.

LS/GSR 2nd with 4.928 FD is your closest match. Next is stock B16/ITR.

7,000-7,500 is what I looked at as that's what you're concerned with.

B16/ITR 7k = 53mph, 7.5k = 56mph

LS/GSR 4.928 7k = 52mph, 7.5k = 55mph

LS and GSR have the same 2nd gear ratio so it doesn't matter which you use with the 4.928 FD. GSR would be better though as it uses a double cone synchro for 2nd whereas LS uses single cone.

when i race i leave it in second the entire race. so would that still make a difference in which is better between the gsr and the ls? it wouldnt would it?

The GSR/LS with 4.928 would have slightly better acceleration. Wouldn't really be worth it unless you need every bit you can get.

The LS will be slower in 2nd gear without the 4.928 FD.

Well thanks for all of the help. I believe I have decided to go with the gsr tranny since it will give me the best acceleration.

You need the 4.928 with the GSR/LS otherwise the B16/ITR trans will give you better acceleration.

GSR/LS trans with the stock FD will accelerate slower.

how great of a difference do you think it will be between the b16 tranny and the ls with the stock final drive? like i say when i race it stays in second gear the entire time and my rpms never drop below 4 1/2 or go above 7 1/2. do you think the price difference between a b16 trans and the ls trans with stock fd would be justified by the acceleration difference between 4 1/2-7 1/2 rpms?

Will be a big difference. Price is definitely justified.
