Bought ITR Not Sure On Tranny (plz help)
hey guys, ive searched for this and got a few hits but not in depth what im looking for, heres the details.
I recently purchased a rebuilt acura integra type R that was pre-katrina.
after revising the car i noticed that the tranny wasnt stamped "LSD" so i proceeded to look for the tranny code. The code is stamped "Y80". I did some researching and i found out it could be a LS, USDM GSR, JDM GSR TRANNY. I immediately wanted to rule out it wasnt a ls tranny. i went out for a cruise, at 5th gear i was cruising at 80mph @4500 RPM. I think that rules out any chances of being ls since my other car "LS" hits 80 @3500RPM. With that said im left with either usdm gsr or jdm gsr. I was thinking about doing a quick burnout to see if both wheels would stick to the ground but i dont know if this theory would work like that to prove if you have LSD.
I dont want to take out the axles right now. I would like opinions from you guys to see what you guys think i might have. Any info is appreciated.
Thanks

Also, What good is the serial number on the tranny for if you cant do anything with the numbers? i have the sticker with the serial number. Will this tell you anything about the tranny?

jacked up the car. in 1st gear, spinned tire and they did not spin together. Burnout is next. Im installing a camber kit right now so im in the front end.
burnout is not a reliable way to test since an open diff will spin both on a flat surface. checking for the pin is what i would do. still, as others have said, y80 is early gsr like 94-95. i know in 96 they also got the s80 sticker.
that's what i thought to but the helms manual actually says they should spin together. It says if one wheel doesn't spin or spins in the opposite direction, replace the LSD. When i tried my car, the wheels didn't spin together, one stayed stationary. another way to test it is to jack up one wheel and spin the other with a beam type torque wrench. i dont remember the spec but it's in the helms manual.
no doubt, thanks to everybody for the advice. I guess i'll find out when i need to replace the axles. Right now its not that important to me to the point of taking it apart to look at it. Thanks
