The "colors" are varying thicknesses usually a dot on the side of the bearing (someone will need to verify this). You would check to see which color was originally installed and then measure to see if you need a different thickness.

since the beginning of time

OP,

What color were the ones you are replacing? buy the same ones. but, it's always wise to plastigage it for the correct clearance then buy the bearings that those measurements fall into (color).

what happened anyway?

or measuring the clearance can be the difference between spending $10 or $60. and that's if he just buy's the lower main like he's asking. normally when you change out bearings you want to change them out as a set. upper and lower. so he could spend $120 if he buys all the colors.

EDIT: and that's just one set. if he bought all the colors of upper and lowers to change out all his main bearings he could spend $500. these are just aprox. costs depending on where he bought the bearings but you see where I'm getting at.

you are correct, also he could get a chart from a local honda dealer, we actually keep our's on hand since alot of customer's ask for bearings, the charts tell you where to look at on teh crank so you can figure out which bearings belong where on the crank.

OIC. The crank shaft bearings that I work with on a daily basis are all the same color. That's why I was asking. Thanks for informing me.
