LOL! whoever told you that must be joking. Do a search and you find a lot of guys on here making good numbers with 9:1 compression ratio. Make sure you get a good tune and you'll be OK.

I built the bottom end in my GSR...its running 9.8:1 compression which isn't far off stock. Do us all a favor and avoid taking advice from that person again

Depends horsepower levels and gas.. I think over 500whp with pump gas, 8:1 might be better to, but i have no experience at tuning this high.. I have tuned stock jdm b16 with 0.8bar and there was some detonation during tuning but we got it solved with walbro and full 3" exhaust and more tuning. With small exhaust, car was detonating at high rpm no matter what... We used pump gas called shell v-power http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shell_V-Power

also depending on what you want.. higher compression you can run less boost and make the same power as runing low compression at higher boost.. w/e you want will be fine tho.

It all boils down to a few things:
1.) Which fuel are you using?
2.) What turbo are you using?
3.) What are your power goals?
4.) Stock or aftermarket sleeves?
5.) What characteristics do you want from the car?

The way i see it, you want to keep your static compression as high as possible without limiting yourself due to one of the above criteria
