Most folk'll say stay away from the "phantom slip" as they call it,but I'm running one in my turbo'd/vitara'd sedan (but it was new + came w some other parts I bought) with no probs so far! (finds wood to knock on)

I've heard that they can/will cause case or final drive damage (due to it's simple design of "pressing" against spider gears),but I have several D cable trannyz for spares and I took time to install it "proper" since case was open for mainshaft bearing/seal.(plus I don't launch @ 6K,ha ha!)
Leaning towards an OBX though if it fails/when it fails LoL (OBX lsds are considered decent for the buck if setup/shimmed properly from what I've read/asked) Go for it if on a budget, but have a spare tranz in case IMHO! I love lighting up both tires @ 50 ish!

There are actually alot of people running the OBX LSD, however, they have "field stripped" it. Meaning they disassembled it, replaced all the bolts, torqued them down, as well as replaced the washers in the correct order they should be in.

There is a site that offers the washers and new grade 8 bolts. http://rbryant.freeshell.org/obx_washers

Shows how to install and the torque specs. Hope this helps.

OBX LSD = ~400 bucks
Quaife = ~1,000 bucks.

Also I had forgotten but MFactory makes a Helical LSD for Cable D series, for ~600 bucks. I would trust this one over the OBX, the extra 200 bucks would be worth it to me.

^How does the OBX hold up once that process has been performed?

There are some shops running low 11's maybe even 10's or faster.

The only downfall people are running into is axles getting stuck in the OBX differential. That is the worst thing I have heard.

Some people just drop it in their car without field stripping it, and has worked fine, so more or less it's a crap shoot, but I don't think I'd take that chance on a trans, as they are expensive to replace if something did happen to fail. I would rebuild it for my own peace of mind.

No I am just telling you your options, getting a half assed chinese LSD would be something I would NOT suggest doing. A tranny is a very valuable component in any car obviously. If you want LSD you will need to spend the money on it, or don't get it at all. This is my personal opinion though, I like to do things correctly the first time so I don't have to do them over and over again especially pulling a trans to pull out the differential.

I WOULD suggest getting the MFactory one, it's only like 200 bucks more to get a quality piece that the company will stand behind (Limited Lifetime Warranty).

If you have a fully built (or going to be fully building) a D series, why would you want to cheap out on something like LSD?

Cheap Fast and Reliable. You can only pick 2.

Get an Mfactory from Aquafina. You won't be disapointed! do not go with OBX you'll end up either losing 30% when you go to send it back, or you'll end up with a $400 paperweight!

Do some research on the operation of the different LSDs. It's not too difficult to see why people steer away from buying the Phantom Slip. If you do MORE research and look at the company that produces LSDs you'll even see more reason to shy away from the Phantom Slip.

Not sure how many forums you troll, but keep an eye out for 'Mista Bone' aka 'Bone' aka ?!?! He is THE D-series tranny guru! I know he's used OBX quite a few times after 'prepping' them. From what I recall they really have poor assembly control. The actually components are solid, but the assembly leaves a lot to be desired. I believe the major concerns were checking washer order and then checking the random grades and torques OBX put on bolts.

Anyway - for the price of a used tranny I was set to going with OBX before I gave up on the car. Nothing else made much sense when it came to price and performance. Quaife gives piece of mind which I would reserve for expensive custom aftermarket gear setups.

Bone did not mess with the OBX's at all. Just installed them. The components are not solid and the runout is horrible. bake1782 above is a customer of mine. We were going to use an OBX LSD in his trans build and went through 3 of them before I had to fight with OBX to get a refund, which they took a 30% restocking fee out of without telling me.

Neither Bone nor myself will even touch an OBX anymore.
