90-91 ex master cylinder on 89 civic lx....
today i bought an 89 civic lx sedan. the master cylinder is bad. well i suspect it is, the brakes wont hold pressure. i have to pump them. i figure since i need to buy a new one, i might as well upgrade. my sedan has disc brakes in front and drums in rear. i know this is a direct bolt on, but will it still work fine with rear drums rather than discs? i dont know much about how brakes work, so if someone could help me out, let me know soon! thank you.
yes it will work. my buddy gave my dad his EX set up and my dad noticed the difference after he installed it. he has an 89 DX HB. my buddy is actually going to be doing this set up on his sedan. he has an 89 LX with rear disc brakes and will be doing the master cylinder swap as well.
eventually i will be switching over. i just bought got the car today. and 90-91 ex came with rear discs, cruise, and a d16a6. 88-89 ex was not available. just dx and lx.
im assuming his car has a rear disk conversion from the previous owner but is using a 13/16 master cylinder that was never upgraded like my car...!!!

my civic has drum brakes in rear, but i bought the 90-91 civic ex master cylinder today. eventually ill have to grab rear discs from an integra or 90-91 crx si. thats where i was confused. i thought the ex sedan had the same things the 90-91 crx had.
the brakes on the civic EX are actually bigger than the 90-91 Si.
i figure they did it considering the extra weight and CG of the sedan with all the options and possibly seating 5 passengers.

so i went out and spent $250 on tools at sears. i installed the 15/16 master cyilnder onto the stock booster after bench bleeding it and its good to go. i took the car around the block a couple times and it stops great. it has 13" steelies right now and when i get some bigger wheels ill upgrade the front brakes to 10.2" rotors with the accord wagon calipers. thanks for the info guys.
