The timing on my d15b is supposed to be 16 +/- 2 degrees.

When I set my timing light at 0 degrees it is not lined up with any marks.

when I move my light dial to 6 degrees I'm about in the middle of the first 3 lines and see a red mark.

If I continue to move the dial on the timing light to about 26 degrees I'm now lined up with the mark by itself and it also is red.

So is my cars timing right now 6 degrees or 26 degrees?

When my timing light dial is set at 16 degrees which mark should I be seeing?

sounds like you may be one tooth off on the timing belt (if the distributor attaching bolts are about in the center of the slotted holes) - with light set at 0, you should be right on the middle mark of the three ignition timing marks to be at 16 degrees BTDC - if you set the light to 16, you should be right on the single TDC mark off to the right of the three ignition timing marks

 

Thanks for the comment. I had been moving my distributor around trying to troubleshoot a code 9. I didn't mark my distributor good enough because when I cleaned up the area I lost my mark.
That's still a little confusing that when timing light is at 0 I'm really at 16 derees

 

Did you disable the electronic timing advance with a jumper in the plug near the ECU?

 

the kind of light that you have will flash the light at whatever you set it for - the light is just a stobe light that lights up the same spot on the pulley every time it flashes, which causes the appearance that the pulley is standing still - it will flash every time the cylinder that you are checking fires, plus the amount of advance that you enter into the light - if you set it at 0 degrees it will flash every time that cylinder fires plus 0 degrees - since the middle mark of the three timing marks on the pulley is located at 16 degrees BTDC (where the timing needs to be), whenever the light flashes on that mark, the cylinder is firing at 16 degrees BTDC - if you set the light to 16, it will flash 16 degrees before the cylinder fires - in this case, since the advance of 16 degrees is already built into the light, it will flash on the TDC mark and not on the middle of the three marks - if it did, it would be at 32 degrees BTDC, 16 in the light plus 16 on the pulley - if the ignition timing was at actually set at 16 degrees BTDC and you set the light to 8 degrees and checked the timing, you would see that the pointer was half way between the TDC mark and the middle mark of the 3 marks
