Default normal operating temperature?

It's summer as we all know it is hot in the southwest. About two months ago I flushed the coolant system and wired the fans to a manual switch. I replaced the no-name thermostat for a honda one (190 degress is when it is completely open i think). I also installed a temp gauge on the water neck where the purge plug was.

Today while driving around in 102 degree heat and other days when the temp is lower, the car levels of to about 195*. After some stop and go driving, or hard driving it slowly begins to creep up. I usually turn on the fan as soon as it hits 205*. Here is the thing, the factory temp gauge will stay at a constant level (its range is something like cold warm hot. hot being above 220* i think) but the temp gauge i installed will either go up some or will stay at 205*.

Could it be that the header is radiating enough heat that it is affecting the sending unit and heating it up. Or could the fan and the heated air it is blowing affecting the sending unit. Or when I previously flushed the cooling system could it have released some debris? thanks

the stock gauge is an idiot gauge. it has a range of temperature that it will see but not change its movement. the ordinary person wants to see a gauge not move at all whereas us car enthuiast want to know where the temp is acurrately at.

so i think your aftermarket gauge is working just fine.

your new temp gauge is working normally. Stock gauge doesn't MOVE when water temps are 160 to 220.

I just installed a AutoZone 170 degree stat, normal water temp at cruising is dead on 180 degrees. Car will heat up to 210 in traffic, then the fan kicks on.

My old stock stat gave same temps as you listed.

Well I figured out why it was heating up. While I was in line at a drive thru, I noticed even with my fans on it was still heating up. It got to about 250* and was idling funny. I checked out the wiring and I had one of the fans polarity incorrect. Stupid me, I am glad it didn't turn out to be an expensive mistake.

stands "for to the top". ok, so 180 is a normal temp and 205 is when the fans should kick on, but what is the temp where its tooo hot, and you may blow a headgasket or something??? thanx

If you see ANYTHING abve 210, turn the heater on and get moving or shut engine off.
