need master tec** 94 civic d16z6 head ** what is this called and which one do i use??
please bare with me first off and thanks in advance..
so heres the problem, i blew my head unknown miles but looks really good as in no dark oil stains. its been port/ polished considered to be a stage one.
anyways so i bought a head with really dark oil stains which means could have really high miles.. or just boosted/ nitrious...got it back from the machine shop had them presssure test, resurfaced, hot tanked, new valve seals... ect ..
i found that the thing circled in red on the head i just got back from machine shop has these things ( im guessing has to do with vtec ) with springs in the middle to activate oil pressure.. well these are really hard like picture you trying to click a pen up and down with your thumb.. hard ones are from the older head that got back from the machine shop, like really hard/alot of resistence. and the ones from my head that looks like lower miles, but only because of the port and polish, are really soft.. so which one do i use?? both are 92-95 heads both single vtec.... help me out master techs??
any advice would be great..
fyi.. setup was a boosted greddy kit vitara pistons.. cam seized looked like oil journals to middle of cam bearings went dry and just ran really hot and eventually locked up... thinking it had to be a lube problem within the head?? would block go out too with this happening to the head?

you could use the same oilers and lock up another cam.
is the oil pump working right...you could spind a bearing also. since the head is off. check the cylinder walls for scoring. if none. its all good.
i would use parts from the unmolested head if it was me, they should be tight
at the time of build i put in a new oem oil pump along with every bearing and seal there was.. so im thinking there shouldnt be any problems.. but there was alot of shavings that i couldnt get out of the block because of having to notch the gurdle and the lower walls for the rods to clear.. i just changed my oil, twice already set up only has 2k on it.. and i changed it at every 1k... also running a magnetic drain plug and a magnet on the oil filter... im thinking shavings could of got into the head and blocked up an oil cannel..?? either way i hope its not my oil pump.. block had scoring to begin with. i just had it polished out but was still very visable when i got it back..

shavings are bad news. i had shavings at one time in a gsr motor and it clogged the oil pick, also paint cloggd it too. from previous of painting 8 layers of gold paint.
i would swith over that top rocker setup from the other head and use that.

so reason why i asked why i should use the soft ones or hard ones is because im thinking hard ones dont have that much of shaft play/ movement = less lube ?? and soft ones move quite freely so therefore more lube?? soft ones will bottom out as in if i press on it with my thumb, spring on inside is weak and it bottoms out.. hard ones are no where close to that.. but i read up on some other forms and said hard ones mean less miles = less wear and tear.. soft = abused or high miles.. ..
i just dont trust both and went with a new set from honda.. hahahah just gota get this out of my mine when im gona be tuning for 300hp.. not alot but good enough for dd.. thanks alots..

i was unaware that lost motion assemblies (LMA) doubled as oil squirters...
isn't the primary function to control the VTEC rocker when not in use?

What exactly are you planning to reuse?? If it got bad enough to seize the cam, i doubt anything in that motor is reusable.
the LMA (lost motion assembly) has nothing to do with oil pressure or flow. Oil does reach the LMA but its sole purpose to keep the VTEC rocker from bouncing around while not in VTEC. Use all the original pieces from the good head and you'll be fine.
