Default b series or d series

right now i have a d16y7 in my 91 rex. it doesnt run right, the trans is going, and im just sick of messing with it and its really slow. i want just a quick daily driver that gets decent gas mileage. ive been looking into either a b18 ls swap or a DOHC ZC. i cant decide between the two. ive never done a swap before but i have friends that could help me out. which would be cheapest/easiest and still be pretty quick?

Better yet, do a mini me swap, just change the head to a z6 or y8 vtec head, but u have to do some wiring mod. Depending what u have now, ill be much cheaper wise and part wise too. If not fast enough for u throw a turbocharger n, could find one bout 500 or so, for tranny, replace it, not that hard to do if ur tranny going out, there's tons of d-series parts out there but that's my 2 cents

Well what is your budget?

I would personally swap in a LS motor because they are cheap, you can find them at your local junkyard, HT markerplace, or craigslist.

You're better off finding a single cam zc vtec or jdm d15b vtec.

i got one in my 89 crx with an s1 tranny.. the only thing is u may hav to beat in the wall jus a lil to fitthe alternator.. other than that it's straight in as far as i kno. i luv the motor. it's got some torque. lots of fun to drive and its faster than a b16a vtec. i got a buddy with a b16 in his and he's running low 16's to high 15's in the 1/4 and i'm getting low 15's on 17"rims.

IMHO its a budget and Intrest thing.

for me.

I like the D-series Single Cam the best. especially the Z\C (dual or Single)

1:Cheap
2:Small, good on gas (then again all honda's are :D)
3:1G CRX-BS comes stock with Z\C, and I <3 1G's
4:Easier to work with
5:nothing to crazy fast
6:Cheap to work with
7:Makes a Cheap AWD conversion
8:Good DD Motor.

On the other hand I am a Big fan of the Non Vtec Dual Cams, mainly the b18a1\b becuase I had a 91 Hatch with LS swap and I loved it. sounds great. and it has decent tourqe which seems to be some of honda's downsides on some of the motors.

Just go with what you want the most, but is affordable.

FYI: Swaps are very easy as long as theres no fabrication involved. Especially with honda's as long as you have some sense of Mechanicle Engineering, it will be snap.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8P4vaCy here's a link to a vid of me with my car agaisnt a new dodge challenger. the best part i like about the motor is the torque. it's a stock b20 motor with some bolt ons.. u can find them almost newhere for under 1000$ and i've seen them for 500 b4. i didn't do the swap myself. BUT. now that i hav 1. i wouldn't want nething else. both the D and the B series hav tons of aftermarket support. it's wen u get into vtec that the prices double.

Boost and tune the single cam and blow any mildly modified Bseries.

thats way to much for a dohc zc

i've gotten 2 for less then 100
(just the long block)

but since your already d series you dont need much.

just the zc dizzy and intake mani.
oh and the cmp!

easy swap i recommend it.

i beat b16's and ls' on ef's

but im using my si tranny

and i let my gas go to E and i put $10 of gas at $3 a gallon..

and i got 110 miles out of it^_^

Nothing, he is saying that the boosted d series cost cheaper then to swap a B series motor.

It's all in the tuning when going boosted.

Back to the OP: The Dohc ZC is a great engine, get yourself an Si trans and slap her in. Use the extra money to freshen up whatever is busted on your car.

u can get an 500$ b-series motor without goin to the junkyard.. the whole swap could cost under 1000$. and they make more hp.

yeah they can be, I would stick to a d series just because its leaves more money for new gaskets, belts, hoses, rebuilt axles and a bunch of other ****.

Nicely done D-Series > half assed B-series

You can go either way.

Exactly. Turbo is the best option for the money to power ratio. I've seen stock block Dseries with a good turbo and tune make 220whp on a good tune.

The onlly one worth listening to so far is Manny ..... pay attention OP.

If you really only have 1k to work with get the ZC. Dual or single, then you will have money left for all the little things that will take all the money.
