Default PRESS IN Cam Seal Plug?

Has anyone got a load of the newer cam seal plugs? Honda recommends this as the preferred part to use, but I just don't know if I like the looks of it. Will post pics later, but for those who know what I'm talking about, what are your thoughts??

Here is a pic of the newer type of cam plug seal that I'm not sure I trust.

I think the new one says P72. Your black seal on the left is the older style, the one I have in there now. I bought one of each because I wasn't sure which one I'd use.

those push in type are what we get now in the gasket kits.
not seen a problem with them yet.
just make sure to oil up the o ring before putting it in.

interesting. i have no idea if my "push in" seal was orig in my 2000 LS, but it leaked badly and i just changed it out last week. i like the idea of the plug having the lip on the inside, too, but i also see the advantage of being able to pop the seal out with a screw driver. mine was really loose, though, and required very little effort to remove. i think i paid $30 for the golden eagle plug. it has three o-rings and is pretty in blue.

Is it recommended to place hondabond around the edge of the seal?

no, just lube the o-rings with motor oil. use hondabond where the cam holder meets the head...or where the thing that holds the seal in place meets the top of your motor.

Hmm... lots of food for thought here. At first glance, the new press-in design looks way less secure than the old style, although I like the O-ring itself.

I currently have the old style in and it seems to leak a bit. Not bad, just dampness.

I recently purchased an all original 2000 GSR and it had the new style in it. Honda must have started using these on later model engines.

I can see the advantage in that you don't have to break the seal on the valve cover gasket to change a simple cam seal plug, but I'm wondering if it actually seals better or just as well, or what? My buddy astutely pointed out that Honda is rarely wrong in their TSBs so I should probably just trust their judgment.

Like I said, just looking at it I'm skeptical.

Still haven't got around to doing my valve adjustment and valve cover gasket, although the semester ends soon, so I'll have time then.

Any other thoughts? I still can't decide which plug to use.

I just install the same exact one you had and it worked flawlessly. No more leaks despite the fact I didn't put honda bond on mines. Just use that one. It's cheap and it works. No need to get a fancy aftermarket one.

I used the one with the lip on the inside. That press-in business doesn't agree with me.

This is how mine looked like last winter when i purchased it from Acura. My old one did not have a rubber seal with it.

you're going pro with this reviving old threads strategy. this one was easy since i had posted in it. i just threw another one of these press-in seals away this week. it came in the 96 i bought a few months ago.
