Icon2 Please help with my dying VTEC

I don't know what's going on with my VTEC. Its only been 700 miles since my last oil change and oil filter change. Oil is full and filled to the line. Engine is a JDM H22. VTEC pulls fine for 4 strong pulls to about 80 WOT, then VTEC starts to die. Its starts to shudder as if its trying to engage, then stops completely. I'll have to let the car sit for a minute until VTEC starts working again but then everything repeats. What's going on? =[

I donno if you guys ever forgot to check your oil level for a while and your VTEC stopped working after a few hard pulls. I have the exact same symptoms although my oil level is completely full.

Bad solenoid? Is it leaking? Has it ever been cleaned?

Nothing is leaking and I cleaned out the screen not too long ago. VTEC engages fine if I only do it every so often. Its when I do back to back runs it dies out.

I found someone on another site that wrote this:

"ended up being the secondary igniter in the distributor and when the vtec came in the motor went more a hotter spark but with it going bad could not get it so it would go in and out almost like it was breaking up."

I wonder if that's the case with mine. : / I also heard it could be because I have an internal coil and is overheating or has broken overtime.

is car fine in acceleration before VTEC ?
take it to 5000 in first, shift into seconcd and take to 5000, shift into third and take to 5000 .. see if it acts up at 5000 rpm or before than it's not VTEC .. do this to further diagnose the problem.

Sounds like a bad connection somewhere.
If you where getting bad spark somewhere, you would throw a code, for misfire somewhere.

If Vtec works fine, and you get it to work a few times, but than it stops working after that, its a connection issue.

I donno its like clockwork, on the fifth vtec run it starts bogging and vtec stop working, followed by a not so good smell. Wouldn't it be more random if it was a connection issue, perhaps 3 times worked 2 times didn't, then 2 worked ect.? To me it sounds like something is overheating. If I keep it under 4 times (0-80) in a row it always works.

Glad to hear someone is having the same issue as me!!!

Yeah if I hit it everyone now and then its fine. But if I go 0-80 three times in a row WOT. Then it dies on me.

Same as you...

How many miles is your engine? Is it a JDM H22 like mine?

I have 50,000 on mine too. Okay were getting somewhere. I'm wondering if its our internal style distributors. I'll stand by on your results of swapping vtec solenoids. Best of luck to you too.

I went to go inspect what type of dizzy I had. I actually have an external dizzy, so I think I can rule out the internal dizzy overheating. Let me know if you make any headway.

I haven't taken mine out and tested it yet. 210lude that was your problem? Did you have the same symptoms as us?

exchanged solenoids and still the same issue.

looked up other problems and it may be my oil pan. it's all dented up.

i'm going to bang it out and see if that's the problem.

that's has to be it for sure. Dents will cause the pressure to drop and give the same symptoms of low oil VTEC wise.

I fixed my problem. Mine ended up being a wiring issue. Whoever wired up my VTEC did not know what they were doing. On the ECU side they just jammed the wires in there hoping to get a connection. So I went to the junk yard and cut off a few pins off another hondas ECU plugs then connected my vtec wires to them and plugged everything in. Car pulls hard every time so far. =D

So how does the dizzy cause vtec to not work?

Vtec is based off oil pressure. Not spark.
