Starting from the cylinder by the cam gear, that's number 1.

The distributor cap only goes on one way and the No.1 Cylinder is usually marked on the top of the cap. Other than that I'm not quite sure what you mean by "is in the right spot"?

I'm pretty sure there is a bit of adjustment to allow you to dial it in. It's not 180° like the old V8s mind you.

There is a secret to setting the timing on these old Honda's though.

The timing belt or the wrong distributor housing/shaft would be the only way to be 180 off.

What were you doing to the car when the no start symptom started? replacing the timing belt? Remove the distributor or just replacing the distributor cap and wires?

I put a new head gasket on so I had 2 pull the dist & the cam gear, but the cam gear only goes on one way with the half moon key way so that's got 2 be right. I bought it from some1 witha blown head gasket & it ran be4 that just fine. had the head resurfaced also

it also "seamed" like It would fire but the timings off. I'm 90% sure its the timing

there are 2 ways the shaft can go in although if your 180 degrees off it will stick out slightly noting you are in the wrong way...make sure the dist is SECURELY seated againts the head..l..good rul of thumnb for starting timing is to align the one support brack on the dist with the one next to it on the motor and go from there.....and make sure your actually gettin spark

well I just checked 2c if I had spark & I DONT! now what??? I checked 2 c if there was any spark @the coil also & there wasn't. put my test light on the conector that goes into the coil & only 1pin had power constantly when the key was on & I tried cranking it and checking the other pins & there was nothing, is that supposted 2 be?

I also just took my ohm meter & stuck one end in where the coil wire goes & the other on the pins on there other side & I have resistance on 2pins ONLY the other 2 are out of range which tells me I might be a coil pob. is my digagnosis correct??

While your checking that out. Make sure that all of your engine harness grounds are clean & connected securely. What resistance readings did you get off the primary and secondary winding terminals? if your not getting proper readings rom your winding terminals try another coil.

so I called napa & had them put the ohm meter on a new coil & all of the pin on the new 1 have esistance. my question is the one pin on mine that doest have resistance doesn't have a wire going 2it anyway so does it matter if there's resistance on that pin?

Did you check to make sure all of the engine harness grounds were clean and secure. Might sound trivial but a poor ground will cause a no start problem. My 1st step to trouble shooting is check power and ground connections.

If he said no right away without looking at your car. Then he also should have been able to tell you exactly what is wrong with it.

Is the CEL on by chance?
