NEWBIE - Changing coolant & MTF on '00 5 speed 2.24cyl - some questions
Hey All:
I am a newbie when it comes to doing anything on my 2000 5 speed 4cyl Accord Sedan.
Can anyone provide some quick tips on how to change the radiator coolant & manual transmission fluid on my 2000 5 speed Accord?
Also, how much fluid is required for each? What kind of mix did you guys go with for the coolant, and can I get away with the aftermarket prestone stuff or should I go with the OEM fluid?
Are there any writeups for either procedure? I tried to do a search but I couldn't find anything.
Thanks!

i highly recommend using honda MTF (10W30 oil works, but MTF is better
) 3qts should be enough. 2 may do, but i can't remember if it's 2 and a splash... better safe than sorry and all..
drain from 3/8 square socket bolt on the passenger side of the trans below the inner CV joint. the fill bolt is about 5in. away. a nice long-handled 17mm wrench is best for that. it's full when it begins to drain from the fill hole.
tips... a funnel with a length of maybe 1/2in. dia. hose less than a foot long some type of 90º elbow fitting

something like this. assemble that with some common sense and you should be able to fill from the top easily.
some guys will also fill through the speed sensor hole, but i've made it a habit to leave the speed sensor alone since it has a tendancy to break when removing on older models.
coolant: service manual says "only use genuine honda fluid" but any green coolant from the autoparts store will do. mix 50/50 with water. about 2 gallons mixed should do.
large volume funnels that seal to the top of the radiator seem to work best for getting all the bubbles out.
something like this "spill-free" VVV

i let the car run with some excess in the funnel untill the bubbles stop and i can't coax any more out of the upper radiator hose. there is also a bleeder screw somewhere... maybe on the thermostat housing...

hondamark35, thank you for taking the time to provide me with quite an informative post. I will definitely follow your tips for the MTF change.
Would anyone happen to know exactly where to release the coolant from? Is there a bolt on the block somewhere? I want to drain from the block as well as from the rad if possible.

on the bottom of the radiator there is a black or white pastic screw type thing in the middle....unscrew it and drain
thanks
this must b the easiest thing ive done to my car lmao and im no pro trust me gd luck its easy just unscrew, drain, screw, fill, repeat if necessary lol
there is a large plug above and towards the t-belt of the oil filter. you may only be able to see it with a mirror and it's very tough to get to and break loose. i think that's the only place to directly drain the water jacket in the block. i wouldn't try it.
the way to let out more than what the radiator will drain is to pull the heater hose from the metal pipe nearest the water pump. this should drain most of what's in the block.
