*H22 Timing Belt Geniuses - Need Help setting Timing with manual tensioner, Plz - *
I have been working with this off and on with and with out a friend now for about 3 weeks and is it very Frustrating. And i dont know if the belt is just stretched from putting it on a off and tensioning it so many times or what. .. Here is the deal.
H22a with all h23a manual tensioner parts.
Tried each method a few times.
First method - using the manual. Set everything to TDC and then turn belt CCW three teeth to set tension then tighten tensioner. Then rotate belt till cam gears where pointing up to TDC.
- Every time I did this the line between the exhaust/intake cam gear was off by 1 or 2 teeth.
Second method - offset the exhaust cam one or two teeth above or below the line on the intake cam - thinking it would line up in the end.
- never worked. Same results.
Third Method - Hold intake cam and try to turn the exhaust cam CCW while pulling out the slack and getting the line between the cam gears to line up then tensioning belt by rotating CCW three teeth, then continued rotating belt till gears ended at tdc again,
- still same results.
Fourth Method - get everything to TDC and tension belt without rotating it three teeth. would like to do this but i cant seem to get enough tension on the belt or all the slack out. till its snug
Somehow the belt is one tooth off from the gears
and it is the h22 belt cause the h23 belt doesnt fit, it has larger ribs and they are spaced differently.
Problems I am seeing is that when I attempt to slide the belt on the gears it wants to pull the exhaust cam gear until the belt lines up on the intake cam gear. I think I got around that part.
But the other problem, seems like the major problem is there is way too much slack between the exhaust cam and the crankshaft sprocket before tensioning.

Just line everything up and whatever is off, just take the belt off bump it a tooth back or forward, put the belt back on, rotate the engine counter clockwise a few times, re-check. if something is off, chuck it one tooth forward or back.
Easiest way I've found is to put the belt on the water pump last, once you've got it on the cams and crank, roll it counter clockwise while having a friend make sure everything stays in time, and then put it on the tensioner and then the water pump. roll it around back to TDC and re-check timing. re-adjust as necessary.
