Default Valve adjustment necessary?

I have been noticing my engine seems noisier to me, this is going to be hard to describe but cold it sounds perfectly normal. ONce it warms up. idle still sounds fine but on acceleration under light load, it almost sounds like a hollow type of purring noise. Of course louder than a cat but that's the best sound I can compare it to. Does anyone know what an engine might sound like should it need an adjustment? I have 72,000 miles on it, I'd like to say I've been gentle on this car but I haven't, I keep up with oil changes, I use synthetic, but you do need to wind these out to get anywhere.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
