harmonic balancers ATI , OEM
ok I am rebuilding my motor and want to run a different crank pulley, but I dont want to waste my money. I currently have a ctr N1 pulley, but been looking at the AT1 super damper but they seem no different than the stock pulley excep that they have interchangeable grooves. I searched fluidamper and only came up with tons of negative reviews. I dont know what to get.
I dont use power steering or AC.
I want to know if its worth it to spend $350+ for a pulley thats similar to stock, or just use a stock pulley. or just keep the N1.
motor is B20/vtec goal 500+whp
last motor 440whp ls/vtec

An aftermarket balancer is useful for achieving more precise timing, especially at higher RPM so it can help to raise the redline. I'd consider it more of a "fine tuning" addition, used to get the most out of a built motor. It can also make the motor run a little smoother, depending on how balanced it is to begin with. Whether or not it's worth spending the money is your personal preference. I'm not familiar with the differences between your stock and N1 pulleys but check their sizes. Smaller than stock will underdrive the alternator and Hondas already don't generate alot of electricity at idle.
the ATI is very far from an OEM Pulley -- they are specifically built to dampen vibrations of a high RPM or High Horsepower engine
any b or k series engine that i have seen can benefit in bearing and oil pump longevity by adding an ATI damper
i can't count how many people i have spoken with that had engine and oil pump problems until they put a ATI damper on their engine
they really are worth every dollar you spend on them.
not to mention they are also SFI approved to meet any sanctioning bodies requirement for racing

Some time ago on Kingmotorsports site they would machine off the PS and AC ribs off a OEM pulley. Not sure if they still do this. Just a thought.
no complaints outta my ATI.....If your already spending the cash to make 500+whp, then what another $350 for a little piece of mind. What rpm do you plan to rev to? If your staying at stock then keep your stock balancer, if you're going above, then invest.
Im not familar with a N1 pulley either, but if it is just an underdrive pulley with no dampener, then throw that thing away, it will bring you nothing but misfortune

I usually rev to 9600rpm, I just never seen any real review or true rightup of the difference of the 2 ballancers compared to stock balancer. to me ATI looks like a pretty version of the stock pulley. I just wanna make the right decision, I just mess my motor up and rebuilding it. wanna make the right decisions this time.
