Default EGR? check engine light.

Any out there got a tool that will help clean out the carbon in my EGR ports?
I got a 98 ACCORD V6 with a check engine light on for EGR, can't pass emissions.

i would just use a drill bit it only make the hole slightly bigger. And make sure and blow out the intake manifold

Remove the intake manifold. You should see the single EGR port all gunked up near the throttle body. You can use a drill bit as stated. You don't want to oversize it unless you are going to install the EGR pipe kit from Honda and use their special step drill. The reason I say that is because if you ever decide to install the pipe kit you don't want to have oversized the hole too much and make the pipe installation impossible.

Removing the carbon buildup alone without drilling will work and should last a few years. Make sure the carbon comes out, not in. That's the reason for using the drill bit. I also recommend performing this task by hand. Don't use a power tool. It's easier to control. When you start the car you should WOT a few times to "help" any little pieces that may have gotten into the intake to go through the engine and not stick in a valve seat. Good luck.

I need to do this job as well, has anyone by passed the EGR on these engines?

Also has anyone bypassed the hot water pipes on the throttle body as a performance modification?

EGR reduces combustion temperatures to keep Nitrogen from oxidizing. The ECM reduces the injector duration in precalculated amounts during EGR events. If you block EGR, you will have a DCT eventually and likely experience lean misfires. That could be bad.

Of course I understand the EGR function, but my understanding which is subject to correction is this only happens under very high engine temperatures which are not seen in typical European countries, I'm in Scotland which is not what I would call warm even with Global warming.

I'm talking the 2500 degrees F in the combustion chamber.

dont use a coat hanger. Because it will clog up again exactly why the dealerships have a honda drill bit just to drill them then they tap in a little cylinder inside them

remove the manifold and the egr valve.. use a screwdriver, it is best to also use compressed air, and also use carb cleaner to soften up the carbon ,,
no need for a drill that is used to make the hole bigger if you want to install the pipe that comes on a egr kit from Honda ,,,,,,
the key is to make sure to clean all the carbon

Seriously, don't use anything but a drill bit for this job. You don't have to oversize the hole. The point of using a drill bit is that by design it will pull the carbon OUT of the manifold. You don't want to push any into the manifold to be run through the engine when you start it up.
