I didn't think I would be able to get any of them off. Luckily I was able to get all of them off, except for one.

I am going to take my car back to the shop that did it and complain about it. I'll ask them to loosen all the lug nuts on that wheel and retighten them with a torque wrench.

The worst part about it was that it was a Honda dealership that did it. I have taken it to super cheap indy shops that took the time to use a torque wrench on the lug nuts. They don't even need to use a torque wrench, just don't set the impact wrench on the insanely tight setting.

I know what you mean. I work at a tire shop and watch other techs all day gun the mess out of the wheels. I take my time and do it right cause i know if it was my car that's what I would want. Plus I don't want to have to fix the stud if i over torqued them XD

I think I need to come into your shop and have you work on my car the next time I need tires!

I have a trusted general mechanic, who I've asked to only use a torque wrench on the lugs and has done so. I go to a different suspension/alignment shop, they only ever use a torque wrench, and actually looked insulted when I asked them not to use an impact.

OEM wheels, idiot drivers, impact is fine. If you have any car mods done, including wheels, you should find/have a shop you trust that will do what you ask.

Before finding these places, I've certainly yelled at my share of shops for over tightening my lug nuts.

I've never heard that before, and I don't believe it.

However, they may not be as precise as a torque wrench.

the torque stick is not meant to replace the torque wrench but rather prevent the user from over tightening the lug nuts by way of the torque stick in place on the impact. i actually tested this at the shop, at the lowest setting on the gun the lugs still tighten past 100 ft/lbs for a torque stick rated for 55 ft/lbs no greater.

last time I had to work on sisters car a stud snapped because they were so tight. I take my wheels off and bring them in when I get tires put on so they wont F up my studs.

Yes because we should all take our rims off our cars to go have new wheels put on them then put them back on. I hope your comment wasn't serious, if it was you are an idiot.

When I got my 99 Hatch the guy had taken the hubcaps off and just riding on black steelies which looked stupid. So I decide to throw the hubcaps back on. Three studs snapped off because it was so over tightened/cross threaded and two more were stripped. Some people should never be allowed to touch a car.

cross threading has nothing to do with a tight lug. if someone tightens a lug to the point that the threads smear and strip that's the fault of whoever is doing it. if a lug is just torqued to 150lb and you can't get it off, that's what my comment was about. if you're going to work on a car you really should know what to do when you're faced with whatever situation is in front of you.

Yes even though I have never over tightened or stripped a lug in my life because I use a torque wrench. You sound like a retarded ethug who thinks he's being a smart ***, yet doesn't know two ***** about anything.

I thought you were referring to the fact he had taken to get his wheels put on somewhere else. Sorry about that.

I might need to hit the gym.

Although the 4 way lug wrench I was using was starting to flex , so I think I was putting about as much torque as the wrench could take. There are surely many stronger people out there, except it might not have helped.

If I had a compressor, well that would have done it.

Seriously, what does physical strength have to do with mechanical ability?

I could have gotten a breaker bar and gotten it loose. I was just too lazy to do that. If I really needed it off that is what I would have done. Why are you being such a hater about this?

What if you were out in the middle of nowhere and got a flat tire and couldn't get some of the lug nuts off the wheel? There is no way a compressor is going to help you out there, and how many people carry around a breaker bar in the car? You would be in a bad place. That is why I bring this up. It is important not to overtighten lug nuts to the point that people can't get them off.
