Default Transmission problem I think?

My brothers 97 civic dx has been making some weird grinding and clunking noises and we have replaced the motor mounts and the passanger side halfshaft axle and it has gotten a little better but it still makes the noise. Before it made it while turning right and while going uphills or running it pretty hard. So I figured it was the cv joint so we replaced the axle and it still did it. So I couldnt think of anything it could be so I took it to my local mechanic who I know very well and he looked at it for me and said look at the motor mounts that might be a problem. We looked at them and 1 was gone and one was terrible so we replaced them and that made the noise stop while turning but it still does it going straight and up hills just not near as bad. I am wondering could the input shaft bearing be bad or what maybe the transmission? I have searched all over and asked so many people and have tried a bunch of things just wondering if you guys might be able to help me out. It would be greatly appreciated.

i did a z6 swap in my fathers car and i have a bad input shaft bearing in that tranny.. does the noise change with rpm's? when you downshift does it whine like crazy? if so it sounds like the input shaft bearing is unfortunately your problem. Its not that bad to change its just time consuming... If you find out for sure your best bet would be to just get another transmission, there pretty cheap now. good luck dude!

does it make this noise at idle while at a stop? or does it make it only going down the road?

It doesnt seem to change with rpms that much just with different gears but in a way ya I guess it does change with rpms but it does not whine when you downshift and I have been looking around for a good transmission because I figured it might just be easier to go that route.

No it doesnt make it at idle or while at a stop only while going down the road but I did notice that it likes to do it like if you stop at a red light then go it does it alot more then and also more in second gear than any other that I have noticed. I have no clue what it is I have changed so much stuff in this car and it still doesnt stop it got better when I changed the motor mounts but still didnt fix it someone also told me it might be ball joints I dont know though because I dont know what happens when they do so I dont know if this is like it or not im not sure its getting pretty frustrating

it sounds like a bearing in your tranny has a little pitting......either that or one of the gears in the tranny has some chips or something like that on it.....i would suggest draining your tranny fluid, inspect it to see if there is any metal or debris in the fluid, then change it......and see what happens.

I drained the old fluid out of the transmission today and it did have some fine metal shavings in it but it didnt look like nething to bad. I noticed that when I refilled it, it started to leak out of the drivers side where it axle shaft goes into the transmission im guessing its a bearing or seal or something but im just thinking about buying a used or rebuilt transmission and putting it in and not throwing all my money into all these other things im just going to change the tranny and go from there. Do you guys think that this will fix my prolem? I hope that it does its getting frustrating.
