Oil life of 2009 honda civic
Hi,
I have a Honda Civic 2009 sports model. It only has 2000 KMs on it but the engine life indicator is already showing 70% engine life remaining. Can anybody tell me if it is normal as I do not think this is normal as last time when I took my car to the dealership the guy told me that I need oil change after 30000 KM or so while it is already showing 70% sign. I use this car not very often just grocery stuff not even to work place.
Thx

2,000KM is ~ 1,250 Miles ..... seems KIND of low to me for it to already be at 70%, but the Oil Life Indicator factors your driving habits (and possibly other things) into the equation when it displays the "oil life."
Do you drive it faster than normal? If so, then the computer will decrease the oil life % appropriately.
bottom line: the honda engineers who made the Oil Life Indicator are > (more superior than) the dealership employees! the people at the dealership are just trying to make a quick buck. Just wait for your car to start throwing you messages about oil life and you should be good to go

I am a very carefull driver and since I normally use this car on regular roads which already have speed signs on them so it is not possible to go beyond these limits but I still think for 2000 KMs and 70% is not right. Something is wrong with the engine maybe ike it is rusty inside etc?
AS FAR AS I KNOW, the car doesn't actually CHECK the oil for cleanliness. it just basically adds up RPM's over time, so the higher you rev in general, the quicker your % will go down.
whatever you do, don't quote me on that ^ but it's what i've gathered.

I don't think 1250 miles is abnormal at all to be at 70%. Everyone seems to get between 4000 and 7000 miles on their oil before the computer goes to 0%. So if you extrapolate 1250 miles for 30% that means at 0% he would have put on 4166 miles. Is that low? Doesn't seem to be.

Yay for math.
I get about 2200 miles per oil change. (Usually 15%-10% oil life) <rolls eyes>

Yeah, I also tend to leave it in a lower gear, since I do mostly city driving and there's no point in upshifting if I'm going to be coming to a stop every 20yds.

hey, all i was trying to say was that it would be a low % for ME, but everyone is different. oh, and to trust the oil life indicator because it's watching you! in your sleep..

My 09 Si is 1780km and 80% oil life, yours seems normal

since my car is almost new shuld I go for Oil change now before it will polute engine and associated parts?
Have you ever owned a car before? If so, how often did you service it previously?
Have you read the owner's manual?
Hey boxeotampons your avatar shows a 98 civic. Do you even own a new civic? If you did you would know that the number of miles is not the determining factor for when the oil needs changed. It the oil life gauge.
i always change mines at every 5,000 miles no matter what. i just change it yesterday and my oil life was at 30%. i like to take care of my car, as it will take care of me. i'm always shifting at 2,500-3,500.
