first thing i would do is save and not worry about power use your engine for what its made for .. fuel economy after you have enough money saved you can go a couple ways.. either turbo your F22 (will only be able to boost up to about 8psi on stock internals) or swap it for something else one of the cheapest swaps i can think of is the F22b DOHC it runs about $600 for a long block
everythings gonna be up to your wallet and goals

A simple inatke/header/exhaust setup is probably the best way to go when it comes to a cheap effective way to enhance power but keepin. I currently have that setup and I can get 700+kms to a tank of gas, with still some power to pull on the civics when it comes to the flat and in the uphill, (speakin from experience of course) this way would give you some extra ponies fer close to $500 depending on brand name and how well you can do work. for some extra dough you could invest in a stage 1 camshaft, it wont kill your gas mileage bad like drops about 1-2mpg pending how much you baz on it.

Im all about N/A, so that's my two cents!

I would upgrade the suspension and maybe the brakes before you do anything major under the hood.Having power is useless if you can't control it.

You can't get much power out the motors alone without forced induction.

You can upgrade cams and whatnot, but it isn't cheap. I have an sri, catback, and used to have a header. You just have to realize that your car is slow. I never even bother racing people anymore and don't have a problem w/ admitting it is slow.

Just as others have stated, the cheapest power is going to be the i/h/e and while you'll notice and increase in power, you won't be shocked by it.

I can sell you a complete suspension (Neuspeed/KYB), springs and struts for 150, PM me for information.

Regardless, by working on the brakes, suspension and basic bolt-ons you are helping the car along in performance and aesthetics. I would consider saving for a nice set of rims, you can find then used everywhere with decent tires on them so consider that. I sold a set of rota circuit8's in bronze 16" with brand new tires on them for 400 used.

There are a lot of things you can do inexpensively. I would ask you to consider scouring craigslist and ebay for parts, you'd be surprised at the gems you can get.

your better off saving your money and throwing a turbo on it if you cant do internal work...only thing you would need is a good tune injectors and a upgraded exhaust probably 3in...also a ecu too...other than that if you want cheap upgrades exterior IE lips, drop, fake hid, tint, etc...

edit: when it comes to cars nothing is cheap...if your cheap your better off just throwing a intake on and a lip to look alittle tuner and be on your way...if u want speed h series or k series swap/FI or Internal work...well over thousands of dollars with your sweat tools and hard work...paying some one will double the price ahha

I'd suggest searching, I can't begin to count the number of "what should i do" or "turbo f vs h22" threads we have.

Honestly i would save your money. Focus more on fuel economy in times like this. Simple upgrades include headers and bigger exhaust, that will give you more power and fuel econ. I just bought a turbo m3 and wish i saved my money to put more upgrades on it. Check out my garage and you'll see what i'm talking about. Invest your money into a faster car...

bingo!

although i will comment briefly on my experience...

my philosophy when i got my car bone stock, was to replace parts that needed replacing with slightly better parts. air filter got dirty-> intake; exhaust manifold cracked-> "header;" tires went bald-> new wheels and tires (i maybe went overboard on the last one, but it's paid off..) the other thing that paid off really well for me (and is nearly free) was keeping everything clean.

superclean bone-stock sitting next to a swapped, lowered, converted... but dirty... gets respect from the right people
