Proper and >Legal< way to replace WHOLE Gauge Cluster
I am replacing my entire Gauge Cluster with a new one and want to know the proper way (LEGAL) to do it. My Gauge Cluster was damaged by installation of Indiglo gauges. The New Gauge cluster has 17K and My car with the Gauge Cluster has 46K. Do I set the New one to the same odometer reading of 46K? and take pictures of both?
I want to do it the right way I do not want to lie about my mileage.
PS: Is there a computer chip that monitors the mileage other than the Gauge Cluster?

The ECU does know what the Milage is. I believe the only thing that monitors the mileage is the maintance light. What it does is count a certain amount of miles and then turn on the Maintance requied light, but I do think it remembers what the actually mileage is. It basically acts as a counter that keep counting to 3500 miles and then starts over.

KEEP your old cluster and put in where you can find it later. You can't set the new one to the exact mileage, so for records sake keep the old one.. If you have to prove to someone the mileage (why i have no idea)... you will have accurate proof of it....
Imagine if youdecided to sell it in 2,000 miles.. it would suck someone thinking you put 102,000 miles on your car when in fact you only put, say... 52,000 miles... just show them the gague cluster and your ok..

i think they have to get turned by rotating the first one.. if you jus move the other ones.. i think it messes up the little gears that allow it all to rotate in an orderly fashion.. that and tampering with odometer is illegal.. so just keep your old one.. and be happy..
Ok I installed the replacement Cluster and the RPM Needles jump when the turn signals are used. WTF? Anyone know why it would do this. Are USDM ITR Guage Clusters compatible with USDM GSR cars? I think this guy sent me a broken Gauge cluster. What you guys think?

OEM is your friend...
Don't know what to say to help you out.. I'd just sell a kidney and head on down to the dealer and get an OEM one... all this JDM is overplayed anyway.. and you'll be sure it will work...

and just if you get it to work.. just leave the numbers alone.. don't modify it.... you'll be fine, if you don't lie about the numbers and tell whoever youneed to justify it to.. that youhave so many miles on it and tht you had toreplace the cluster cause someone messed it up...

Actually you can buy a cluster and place your speedometer in it. So my speedometer is exactly the same. No changes.

ok heres an idea...
1. take a photo of the old gauge installed and the new one sitting above it and below it the heading of a newspaper showing that days date.
2 repeat above but this time with the new gauge installed and the old one above and the same newspaper below showing the date.
3 Mail the photographs to yourself and when you recieve it dont open the envelope.
then when your selling your car you can show the buyer the unopened envelope, with the postal date stamped on it, then open it and show them the photographs, then it will be just a case of simple math to determine the actual mileage. This should be afequate proof for anyone buying

old gauge 47k
actual mileage is 47 + (28-14) = 61K

Not sure if there is even a legal way to roll back mileage. I know in CA there is a box you check below on the "Bill of Sale" form from DMV that saids not actual mileage who anything that involves "mileage concerns".
Ok i don't need to do this. I removed the whole piece that has the odometer in it and placed it in the new cluster. So now the milage still the same and I have a new cluster. Everyone wins

That's a nice idea, but how are you going to prove that it was your car which you took the pictures from?
