As topic states I just swapped an engine and the fan is not turning on and the temp gauge is not working either. I checked the plug and ground on the thermostat and both looked fine. Also made sure that the plug for the radiator was indeed connected, it was.
make sure you connectors are plug... temp guage is under the dizzy.. and fan switch should be on the thermo housing

i checked all and even switched out the 2 sensors with a motor I had laying around. no difference.
Then start from the beginning.. bypass the thermo switch ( fan should kick on)
Ground the guage wire ( it should read hot )

could the thermostat stuck cause the gauge not to work and the fan to not turn on?

i've checked everything. all wires, ground, fuses, relays. WTF is wrong!
So your fan works when bypassing the switch..... Now check the gauge sensor.... I think they may be tie together.
1. Unplug the temperature gauge wire at the sending unit, most likely located under your dizzy.
2. Turn the ignition key to the on position but don’t start the engine.
3. Ground the temperature gauge wire to the engine using a jumper wire and watch the temperature gauge needle. If the gauge now reads Hot, replace the temperature sending unit.

the guage needle did nothing. I also swapped out my cluster for another cluster. Just to make sure that it's not my cluster.
I have even swapped in a temp sending unit from a different engine I had laying around and still nothing... arg!

Try this
Connect a jumper wire to the sending unit terminal at the gauge to a good ground. Turn the ignition key to the on position. If the gauge now reads Hot, there is an open at the wire going to the sending unit. Repair and test again

anyways trouble shoot your gauge first and see if the fan kick on, if it doesn't then your'll need a new thermo sensor also.
Let the engine cool, top off the coolant in both the radiator and reservoir, and then bleed the cooling system of trapped air.

The bleed procedure may take 20-30 minutes:
(Do you have a bleed bolt?)
1) Park the car on an inclined driveway with the front end higher than the rear.
2) Push the dash heater lever/**** to MAX heat.
3) Follow the directions in the diagram below

tried it and fan never turned on. the top radiator hose gets hot and buttom does not...
Is there a chance that your radiator is clogged? If so, flush the radiator after you replace thermostat, refill with coolant, and then bleed.
