I'm going to install an OEM spoiler on my 97 Civic, but I cannot find the part numbers for the stronger trunk springs. Does anyone have a part number or know where I can get them? Thanks.

 

I think tere are different setting on trunk tension. I believe you nuud to move the bar in the trunk.. I know that is how it works on some cars but not sure on your car

 

your best bet is a junk yard. we dont even list a part number for the spoiler or the springs. they came as a package back in the day.

by the tool! it makes it a heck of a lot easier.

 

Yeah, I know they usually come as a package, but there is no sense spending $400+ from a dealer's website when I just picked up one for super cheap (oem Honda).

That's right, you gotta have that spring tool. I have a homemade version that I used on a friend's Civic. It worked perfectly and saved me $30 bucks.

Yeah I was doing some more searching online and it seems like those P/N were replaced by 08F13-S02-100R1 - SPLR, SPRING R/L KIT (both springs) - which a lot of places are showing it as a discontinued part number. I found a place that had it, so I ordered it. Hopefully they don't call/email me and say they can't get it because it's discontinued.

Trunk springs are a pair of metal rods that go on the inside of your trunk under where the rear glass meets the top part of the weather stripping. When they are installed they provide a preset amount torque that helps control the movement of the trunk. You should install a stronger set when a spoiler is put on because the spoiler adds additional weight to the trunk lid.

 

You could also fab up a strut system like they have for the hood.

Stronger trunk springs are easy, no need to spend money. Just hit the old ones with a torch(Get em good and hot) Then cool em off. This will stiffen them up, and wala... stronger spring.

If at first they are not stiff enough, just heat em again.

 

go to a car with a trunk and pop the trunk. look where your rear speakers are and the bars that run side to side are the "springs" they are talking bout. they arent an actual spring but what lifts the trunk up by twisting the bends.

Yes, the coupes and sedans have trunk springs while the hatches have lift supports.

Open the trunk on a '96-'00 Civic coupe or sedan and look at the "ceiling" of the trunk. You'll see two metal rods in there. Those are the trunk springs.
