what to do???
i just got back to honda game not long ago.
i have a 90 crx si, have most of interior in it. no ac. it weight 2380lb with me in it. i wait about 180lb.
it have a b16a y1 LSD tranny, skunk 2 gen 1 manifold, adjustable cam gear set on 0,0. dc header 4-1, intake and full catback, lightweight flywheel and stage 2 clutch. converted to obd1. running crome. p30map.
here's my problem, i was running 10.009@70mph 1/8 mile, so i bought the manifold and convert to obd1. i was so expecting to be at 9.8 to 9.9 but i end up with 10.13@72mph. i was pissed.
i notice i gained more power from 3rd gear, i was going to turbo my car, but right now it be about a year before i even close to turbo it. i have a LS motor laying around. so i really thought about lsvtec.
here's my goal i be very happy i can run 12s even high 12s on a 1/4mile. and i feel turbo was the only answer, which thats fine. but i want to be in 13s now. high 13s be ok. this b16a just don't do it for me.
what **** me off, i seen ppl out there with same setup i got but running type r cam and bigger throttle body and hit 13.8. i just don't think type r cam will shave a sec to sec and half off on my car. if its does i go buy the cam now. but just a lot of money if i don't run close to that.
so i was thinking a different motor? LSvtec? or rebuild my motor and drop p30 piston in? this is my daily car, so i couldn't afford constent problem. and i heard LSvtec just not reliable.
one of the reason i was thinking p30 piston becuz most of ppl i know that run 13.7-13.9 with the setup are using b16a2 motor. the only thing i know of different is the piston and cams, and different ecu. i can still turbo it in the furture running 8-10psi stock and tuned. (plus i don't get on it every five second anyway) but then i know LSvtec will give me a better result and i have the bottom end already.
what u guys think??? whats my option?? if i go LSvtec and make it high compresson, will i able to run 12s with max 12:1cr setup(without turbo), i know i would have to tune and get better cams....etc. but i don't want to do it if i can't hit the result and still spending too much money.
there's somebody have to been thu this road before, so i figure i ask, thx

first off, an LS/Vtec is only as reliable as you make it. i have had mine in my crx for the last 4yrs and no issues at all, minus normal service that is expected with any motor.
you might be better off getting your motor done at a shop, especially if this car is your DD.

ive done my brothers b20vtec in his wagon 4 years ago and thing is holding up til today. (in his crx went 12.8) you can say thats reliable.
LSvtec is reliable too. do it once do it RIGHT. take your time on it. give it it's maintenance like you would every other motors. get ARP head studs too and not stock head bolts.
i have lsvtec in my car right now and its a 4dr. i went 14.1 best time with everything on my car and a bike rack. its daily'd for the last, almost 2 years now. depends on what your pocket can get you, go for that (if you can get turbo, **** why not. if dont have to much to spend, go lsvtec.) remember slicks makes a difference.

MY_EFsedan is right, do it right the first time. on a side note when i did my lsv i used new stock headbolts and those too are holding up fine since the swap was done. and i have DD my rex since july 08. and it handles nicely in my rex.
Oh yea its also going to matter what state you live in. i live in cali and to be good you will have to Ref your car.

LS/VTEC will in the end give you ~10-15 ft lbs more of toruqe for ~600-800 bucks roughly doing it correctly.
IMO it is not worth it, save your money and boost the car. Also get some seat time in and you will bring down your times also. What are your '60 ft times? Every .1 of a sec off your '60 foot time is .2 tenths off your 1/4 mile time.
Just practice your launching, and if you are running a stock p30 basemap for a b16, if you spend some money on the tuning it will net you some hp as the stock tune is made for fuel economy and can be touched up to pick up some power.
Right now you are looking with 10.009 ~15.60's in the 1/4 mile. As I said before, you need to get more seat time in as this is the cheapest mod you can get.

i only run 1/8 mile 10.009@70mph, 2.45 60ft. with stock intake mani and obd0, after obd1 (chip p28) and skunk2 gen 1 mani, i ran 1/8mile 10.13@72mph(.12 to .09 back and for) 2.45 60ft. my map is a p30 base map with type r ign and fuel table. i know is not the best, thats what i can able to run and its not running like crap like all other map. which i plan on tuning it pretty soon. i notice with the skunk2 i feel strong on top end. it pull at lot harder. i know my launch suck. i try to work on that. i race against a scion tc and a h23a prelude auto, they were dead even with me till i hit 3 gear, then i start to pull away from them. just disapoint i spent 400bucks for obd1 and manifold, and i ran slower then before. i trying to get my launch down, but having a lightweight flywheel and sticky tire(falken azenis rt615) little bit hard to get the launch down. i thought about rebuilding the bottom end, may be even droping p30 piston then boost it later.
holy screen door.
an LS/vtec will be plenty reliable, you just have to build it to be. This means don't be running a 13:1 compression ratio or something crazy like that for your DD.

just run the lsv, thats what im doing. just upgrade to arp head studs and rod bolts, new bearings, better cams. its up to you what to do with the piston rod combo. im going itr on ls rods with the arp rod bolts. but ive been told to be completely bulletproof you gotta run aftermarket rods with aftermarket bolts/head studs
yea, i gonna get a set type r cam and 66mm blox tb in couple weeks, and also i be getting it tune too, at least if i go lsv, i can use the cam and tb too. but i fixing to do a CR test too. Just to see my motor need rebuild or not, whats psi on stock jdm b16a? same with del sol vtec?
