Need help identifying this part for fabrication
Hey guys,
Just joined up and been reading. I'm trying to fabricate some chassis underbody braces and can't really find out what the little cylindrical piece with the hole at the bottom (which joins the brace to the chassis) is called. I need to order a bunch of those and I sure hope I don't need to make them myself!
You can see them here

and these as well:

I'm hoping I can find out what those are called, so I can look them up on McMaster or something... (those are for a WRX btw, in case you're scratching your head on 'wtf is this part')
Thanks!
Ambert

Hi,
Those are called chassis adapters, and as far as I know, you cannot buy them as off-the-shelf parts. I'm building a frame and I looked for them forever. I was going to spin them out of round stock on my lathe using a boring bar, but not everyone has access to a lathe.
There are a few other ways to make them. You can either weld a washer to the end of a piece of tubing, or you can make it out of solid stock by drilling out the center. You would first have to drill out a clearance hole for the bolt to go through, then use a counter sink or counter bore bit (depending on what fastener you're using) to make room for the head of the bolt. It's a little tricky to get the holes completely concentric with the outter circumfrence of the round stock, so if you're going that route, make yourself a fixture.
How many do you need, and what size(s) are they? I might be able to help you out.
Best of luck!

cool thanks guys! I'll try welding a washer onto tubing and see how that goes, seems like the easiest solution. May fire up the lathe if that turns out to be too messy
might want to try something else besides a washer.
like make your own "washer" out of 3/16 plate steel(or chromoly), to give it some more strength,
id also make "the washer" slightly larger than the tube you are welding it to.

I just thought of this. You could weld a solid disk to the end of the tube, and then use a transfer punch (same size as the ID of the tube) to mark the center of the washer. This way, the tube and the hole you're about to drill in the disk will be concentric.
Best of luck!

Alrighty, got myself an even BETTER solution than machining one or welding a washer or welding some plate.
The shop I'm working in has one of these http://www.techno-isel.com/Education1/Ed_Gantry3.htm
Fortunately I'm making these out of aluminum (they are nonstructural, so I'm not worried about the strength) so just cad up something quick, put in a block of aluminum and boom! out pops a bunch of these chassis adapters thingies.
will take pics later...
