So theres an oil leak on my Civic and I think its coming from the gasket between the transmission and the engine... Dont know much about gaskets but will appreciate a little help with this. I do know its oil and not transmission fluid because its black... and my oil level is always going down.

People have told me it might be the oil pan but if you own a 93 civic you know the oil pan its on the driver side and the leak its coming from the middle between the engine and the transmission.

If you know how to change this gasket I would appreciate you telling me how.

It could be the oil pan gasket or the rear main seal. Also check for oil dripping from where the distributor inserts into the head and from the VTEC solenoid, if you have one.

 

It sounds like rear main to me based on what he is describing.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news elc0lomb1anito, but this is not a newb job to replace this seal. But if you are mechanically inclined, use the proper service manual and take your time I have faith that you can do it on your own.

The general steps are:


1. Drain oil and remove oil pan.
2. Remove Transmission
3. Remove the clutch and flywheel
4. Remove the seal housing.
5. Remove and replace the rear main seal properly.
6. Installation is reverse of removal.



The rear main is #33 in this image, it seals around the side of the crank closest to the transmission.

So before going and doing all this, make sure you aren't leaking oil from your distributor, maybe replace the O ring while you have it apart because those are cheap.

If its not that $35 or so will get you a brand new oil pan gasket from the dealer. Be sure to use HondaBondHT in the corners where the gasket meets the crank girdle (on both sides of the gasket and make sure the mating surfaces are clean)

You could remove the inspection plate on the trans and wipe inside there, if its all oily in there your rear main is likely the culprit to your oil leak.
