D-series head swap problems
Ok please excuse anything that isn't worded right or sound right. As i'm helping a friend. Ok my friend has a 96 civic ex. Someone else said it was a different model besides ex though. Can't remeber what it was but it is a coupe. Any way he got the car last year with a d15b swapped in it with a obd-1 conversion. But it has a regular ex computer in it. So vtec shouldn't have been working but the had a green wire hooked to to the one sensor for vtec (that has the green wire coming out of it). I can't think of the name right now for it. And it was ran to the computer. He bought it boosted also on 8lb's. As for the computer being chipped it would have to be but i've never took the cover off the computer.
Well he put a rod out the block about 6 months after buying it. He rolled his 93 hatch he had. So he talked me into swapping the motors just to get it running. The hatch had a d15b7 in it so we put it in. Rewired the dist. and had it running. But didn't have any power down low and wouldn't pull past 5k while in boost. It's kind of hard to explain but at 5k it would act like driving into deep water. Like holding back and have a stutter. Well it blew the head gasket like 2 days after. He drove it before we could figure out the problem.
So he talked me into swapping heads. So now it has the d15b head on it. I followed the mini me swap and such. Like the belt, removing the oil jet and that good stuff. Changed the dist. back agian. Got it running and the timing was off by a tooth. So no big deal popped the belt of again and made sure it was right. Did the arrow on the crank, then the cam sprocket put the up. Up and aligned the lines straight across with the top of the head. But the plastic piece behind the sprocket with the pointer lined up with the 7o clock mark. It still has the d15b sprocket and back piece.
Stuck it back together. And the i had to turn the dist. all the way towards the front to get the timing marks to line up with the timing light.
But when turned all they way back it would still run. I did the jumper thing also by the computer. Took it down the road and had a little more butt down low. But still did the same thing up top but would pull fine in first gear. And after that it made its way to 7k unlike before falling on its face at 5k.
I know the setup isn't really built for boost now with the compression as high. But he wanted it so i did it. But i don't get why it is acting the way it does. It did it before the head swap and now it's better. And when the motor was in the hatch it wouldn't pull past 5k then. When i took the head off the d15b7 i noticed it had a timing belt done. And the only thing i can think is the timing was off. I never paid attention to the cam. I just did the crank at tdc. And the timing is off still for some reason. Any idea's?
Also sorry for the long post. And like i said the setup probably isn't right but he wanted it so. Yea. It also does this with the charge pipes unhooked. O and no codes, plugs are the ones for the d15b and wires are new. It isn't the turbo doing it either as it will stay right at 8lb's during the problem.
