Default type r cam set up.

hi,im currently in the process of getting some type r cams for my b16a3,the problem is that I've done some research and i keep seeing people say "get the type r retainers etc.""so what exactly do i need for this set up to function at its fullest, and what type of basemap can i get till ive have enough money for a real tune.

you need type r dual springs, but I've heard that you can do without them also. contact phearable.net, he should be able to get you a chipped ecu for your set up.

You don't need the springs or retainers but its definitely recommended... You can also just buy skunk2 springs and retainers...

I would also recommend just getting a set of skunk2 stage 1 cams, with a tune you will see significant gains over the type r cams...

I ordered an ECU from phearable with a basemap and it ran worse than with the stock ECU and I know of one other guy personally that had the same issue... Just go straight to the dyno tune, trust me it is worth it...

Don't, I repeat don't, get Skunk2 retainers unless it's a race engine. They are lighter and due to the cut away design, the keepers have been known to pull through and drop valves around 20K miles. It's not that there's anything wrong with Skunk2, they serve their purpose just as they were intended. Other companies have issues with titanium retainers also, but there are a couple that are good for running a long time. You can use stock retainers, or Crower makes some steel retainers that are still going to be a little lighter than stock.

The TypeR's second spring is the only thing different from the GSR or B16, if I recall correctly. I believe the outter spring is the same, and I know for sure the retainers are.

The cam profile of the Type R engines isn't a huge amount more aggressive than a GSR. It's still a factory cam and I've read that most any aftermarket cam will make more power.
-----------
Short answer: Just buy the inner Type R springs, or find some Supertech dual valvesprings and that's enough.

CTR springs are dual springs, right? They should be sufficient. I think they're a little lower spring rate than like Crowers or others, but just don't go revving to like 10K and I would imagine that it would be fine.

Anyone care to verify?

Maybe it was an isolated issue, but it's still worth being careful.
