This is a very basic write up. You can feel free to use it, but look at everything and read everything closely before you ask a question. If you are not confident with wires, don't try this. Simple as that.

This is NOT an alarm. This is a simple way of making it so the car will not start unless the switch is turned off. This will not stop a pro theif from stealing your car. This would make a great add-on for someone with an existing alarm, someone on a very strict budget, or someone who want's to just try something cool.

In this write up I am using a relay. The relay is basically a high current switch. A relay is a MUST if you are killing a high current device like a starter. If you are "killing" a fuel pump a relay is not needed, but it would be advisable (sp?). You could use this to kill ANY circuit in a car. It could be the starter, fuel pump, ecu, dizzy, etc. The options are endless.

Enough with the yapping, let's start:

This is some of the parts you wil be needing.



The relay, crimp ends, a small toggle switch and a self tapping screw.



Using one of the small spades, attatch a thin wire to post 86. This wire will go to the "ignition" wire on your car.



Another spade and some thicker wire attatch to post 87. This will go to the "key" side of the starter wire. You will be cutting the starter wire in two. This will be the "key" or "input" side of the starter wire. A thicker gauge wire is good, as it allows more current.



Repeat the same, and go to post 30. This is the "starter" or "output" side of the relay. This is what becomes disconnected when you throw the switch. Once again, thicker wire is better.



This is where one side of the switch goes. On this particular switch, it only has 2 posts, it doesn't matter which is used. The thin wire is fine, as it doesn't carry much current.

This is the other end of the switch, this will get a ring terminal and get grounded.

So, what is this going on?






























I chose this car because it's bone stock, has no security, and is a pretty common car for people on this site.



This plug on the fuse box has the ignition and starter wire. Simple to access.



Unplug it and expose the wires. On this car the thick Black/Yellow is ignition and Black/White is starter. Cut the starter wire in half and expose the copper.



Hook the wires up. Red goes to ignition, White goes to key, Black goes to the starter.



Solder and tape. A solid connection is critical here. A loose wire or bad connection will not allow the car to start.



Toss some flexloom on it for a OEM look.



Plug it back in and hide the relay. The better it's hidden, the less chance it will be found.



Loom up the switch as well.



This is the ring terminal for the "other" side of the switch.



I simply grounded it to the upper 10mm bolt on the hood release bracket.

This should be used as a basic guideline. You can put the relay ANYWHERE you'd like. As long as the wires are the proper gauge, you can extend them and splice them into any circuit you'd like. There are better ways of doing this, but I am a tad lazy and the car isn't worth much more effort at the moment.

It depends on how well the relay is hidden. If I really cared, I would have loomed it better and hid it higher in the dash. This is just a basic walk through.

good write up man, can you give tips on using the clutch cut off wires for a kill switch? if that makes sense i want to do away with the need to push in the clutch to start my car and wire in a kill switch instead.. btw my car is a black ef hatch just like in your pics..lol

 

to OP: appreciate the writeup. some people really need something even as simple as this, explained to them in great detail. even if one guy understands it, it doesn't mean everyone does. and yes we understand a thief could trace the wires and undo your work but thats true with any safety measure you take. the more time you keep a potential thief working to undo what you've done to protect the car, the more likely it is he will be caught. like he said it can be used on its own or in addition to other security measures. this is by no means an end all be all to protect your car, its simply a cheap way to do something proactive.

 

Sometimes, you just have to quote yourself for others who can't read/comprehend.

Anyone who knows anything about honda security knows better than to rely on ONE form of security, whether it be lojack, a viper alarm, fuel pump shut off switch, etc...

Wouldn't it be nice to catch a thief while they are in the middle of tracing your wires, only to find out you have 3 more security measures in place? Wouldn't it also be nice to find out they overlooked something so simple, as most people do in a tense situation. Something so simple like this "elementary kill switch"

This is very simple. I like it. As long as you loom it in with the other wires, so that it is almost completely un-noticed, it seems like they won't notice it at first. I still prefer a fuel pump cut-off though.

My personal opinion: Under-dash anti-theft counter measures are not incredibly protective... if it was spliced somewhere else, that would be awesome. I like that the theory of a cut-off is shown though.

 

excellent writeup. and stfu to people criticizing. kill switch is very effective if done right, but obviously if someone really wants to steal your car they probably will switch or not.

 

so assuming the same relay and said switch could be used on anything else as well? such as fuel pump cut off switch, dizzy kill switch, ecu and so on and so fourth??
