Dreams of an autocross CR-X
What's up guys?
I just traded my DA Integra for a CR-X. I've wanted one forever, so I figured that I would get rid of the Teg for one of my dream cars. My question is now, where do I go from here?
I want to set the car up for autocross, but I've never prepped a car for that kind of racing. I've mainly just done the usual: an LS swap into an EF, brake upgrades, little things like that. What are some of the things I should do next to the car? FYI: The car is a 1991 CR-X Si with a JDM B16A, Thermal exhaust, from what I can see, Cheap coilovers, some sort of VW wheels, and a APEXi VAFC.
I was thinking of tossing the VAFC (or selling).
Gimme some insight into this, guys.
Thanks.

Just ordered the taillights off of a guy on here in Michigan. I forgot his name though. Can't wait for them to get here. Next: Headlights. Hahaha.
Okay. I've checked into it and decided to run it in the STS2 class of SCCA SOLO. What would be a few of your suggestions on mods to the car? Nothing too in depth, just some basics on what you would add to improve the overall performance of the car.
I was told, that because the B16 never came in Civic/CRX in the U.S. you have a motor that "does not come factory in the car". With this modification alone you would be in the SM2 or EM class which put me up against cars I had no chance of competing with.
Check if STS allows full engine swaps.
Good luck with the build and have fun auto-xing
As far as mods-
1. suspension (stiffer springs and good shocks, maybe a rear sway bar)
2. Good tires (Falken Azenis or something similar)
3. Maintenence (brake pads)

looks pretty clean.
balance your suspension (make all four corners of the car as close to the same weight as possible) if you have the necessary equipment. make sure you have your car built how you want it first, and make sure you sit in the car when balancing. you car may not have the most aggresive looking stance, but you will be pleased when entering corners on a tight course
that would be your biggest advantage for auto x

alright. cool. Thanks for the info.
as far as balancing the suspension, how would I go about doing that? I mean, I've never really worked with spring rates or anything like that. What would be a good idea for a shock and spring combo? I've heard lots about Tokico blues.

use coilovers, which is your ideal suspension for auto x. you want to get automotive scales, one for each wheel. im not sure what kind of scales they are considered to be, but i think they are "automotive" scales. with a scale under each wheel and you in the driver seat (or something equal to your weight), you want to adjust the coilovers up or down to get all your corner wieghts the same. you can also compensate front/rear weight with small sandbags or something like that. so without adding too much weight, get all cornes as close to the same weight as possible.
and remember.. with a front wheel drive vehicle, oversteer is always better than understeer. so softer springs in the front than in the back.
suspension is one of the biggest things to consider in auto x

I just got the car haha. I'll worry about the valve cover later. I have never painted a valve cover. Any suggestions on the paint?
And thanks for the links to those pages. they really helped out tons. :]

If you just want to have fun and cut your teeth. Don't worry about the rules, just go drive. You'll get classed where you get classed. Then you can build a competitive car. Or forget driving around a parking lot and get into something really fun and bring it out to the road course and do a DE/HPDE.
Hello fellow CRX Autox'er. I have an 89 Si that is being prepped for Solo STS. Unfortunately, if you're planning on running in STS in a regional SCCA chapter, that B16 won't allow you to compete in that class.
Go check www.SCCA.com and download the 2009 Rulebook, STS and ST class share the same rules and are one of the most competitive in AutoX as it limits your modifications done to your car and focuses mainly on you honing your driving skills. A good place to start would also be www.SCCAForums.com there's a wealth of info on the ST classes and supportive groups that will help you. Also get in touch with your local chapter to begin attending events.
Car setup / suspension and tires are the key in this class, not to mention driver skill. Coming from a roadrace background first I was resistant to AutoX but as I did it more I got rid of a lot of bad habits that I picked up roadracing. Autox will force you to be a better driver and you can apply that later on in other areas.
Since STS only allows for the motor to be of factory issue, I have begun tearing down the D16A6 to be refreshed and in top running shape. Coilovers and other suspension components were added, but don't be fooled you don't need the bling stuff everyone raves about on the boards. The simpler the better. In fact, adding the biggest sway bar or the best subframe bracing kit out there won't apply here, It will most likely hinder your performance.
I am also going with 15x7.5in wheels with 225/45ZR15 Toyo Proxes R1R's (One of THE fastest street tires with a 140 Treadwear rating) Forget about the Nittos and other crap, the tires that are king in ST are Toyo and Bridgestone, as they offer the most competitive tires for the class.
I hope this has helped you with some insight into racing in Solo, but make sure to check those forums I mentioned, they will help you a lot.
