Default difference between vtec switchover & vtec engagement

sorry if it's a dumb question, but I tried searching and found nothing explaining the difference between the two. i have a eg with a gsr swap and read that the switchover is at 4500 and engagement is at 5800. i know that the engagement is when it switches to the vtec lobe, but at 4500 is when i notice the motor gets louder as if it switched then. so i just wanted to get some clarity about this. by the way i just got the swap so understanding vtec is a little new. thanks

Does the butterfly manifold have anything to do with it getting louder?

yes it will get "louder" because the manifold is opening the secondary runners their for the engine is getting more air and their for getting more fuel there for being louder because more in = more out

How does a GSR redline at 8500, yet max power is at 7100?

He's right... many cars hit peak hp before redline.
Hell even many built civics that can redline at 10k hit peak hp at 8.5 to 9 k.

Reviving an old thread because the question in the original post was never answered. I have seen this as well and am wondering the same thing. "VTEC Switchover" vs "VTEC Engagement."

I know this is a lot to ask, but can we keep the responses on topic?

4000 is the secondary lobes. under that is primary lobes (smaller than secondary) thats why its louder when you get to 4000. and 5800 is the loudest (vtec lobe)

In the B18C1 I am pretty sure that there are only two cam profiles, the low profile lobes that are used when VTEC is not engaged and teh high profile lobes that are used when VTEC is engaged. So I am not quite sure what you mean by "secondary lobes," "primary lobes," and "VTEC lobes."

I am starting to think that nobody knows the answer to this question. :-p
