1986 Hatch, QUESTION, NEED HELP.
want to start competing in autocross and time attacks, this is what iplan to do, feel free to openly criticize or give suggestions.
1. Plan on building a 86 civic hatch for autox, and dropping in an h22vtec.
the civic weighs 1700lbs stock, after gutting and building properly it should be fast and light. and able to compete.
2. the car might not corner as well, so another car i considered is a del sol. what do you guys think? sol or hatch. any other platforms i should consider.?
3. any advice would be helpful from ne one w. experience, what to modify or look out for.
4. i looked around the net and didnt find any swap info about the 3rd gen civic. does an h22 or b18 swap easily as it would into an ef?
thanks for any input guys

check out the red pepper forum. its all for the 87 and down civics and crxs there. waiting for zephyr, shane or any of the others that have old school civics to chime in.
oh, and an h-series goes into an ef like ***** and it definately goes into a 3g/1g alot worse or not at all. i think its too tall to fit in a 3g/1g without cutting up the hood and/or having it run realy low and risk oil pan damage. i think the biggest u can fit is a 1.8. ls, gsr, whatever.
the del sol is just too heavy to do anything. it can be close, but its tough to get it to front running pace. theres alot of other platforms to choose, but the first question is what class do u want to run in?

well with that swap he/she will be in sms at the minimum. lol. obviously time attack will depend on other mods too. if you have never autox.d before then have fun in sms. most regions have some fast a$$ dudes in sms.
the mods don't like the words red pepper racing to be uttered here anymore.
and do not swap in an H22. that would be the worst thing you could do handling wise to the car. unless you want to drag race, forget the H series. b series is really pushing the handling envelope, too. although i am doing a b series in my car currently..
best thing to do? look up heeltoeauto.com and see if he has any of the Tein suspension kits laying around still. they did a few small production runs, like 12-20 sets or so, and if you do want to compete that is your best option. the main issues with these cars is support, which can be found if you look really hard and become dedicated about it, and front shock travel. lucky for me, i picked up a set of the shortened koni yellows before they were discontinued about 4 years ago.
i ran my car in CSP and STS for a while. it wasn't "built" so i wasn't that competitive, but the chassis is great compared to the newer civics as the weight is practically nothing. they also respond really well to modifications of the suspension.
anyways, good luck and if you're serious, you can PM me with most questions you have. i've been playing with mine for about 6 or so years. and they are completely different animals compared to 88+. so don't bother looking for parts for those because most won't fit at all.

and just so you know how tight the engine bays are, B16a header clearance:

and there's about an inch clearance between the intake manifold and firewall.

thnks for the input guys, yes im serious about competing. just putting some funds toghether right now. but yea it looks like the b16 is the way to go for that little engine bay. for some reason i thought the engine bay dimensions were the same as the ef. what other platforms do you reccomend.
The 3G is a fine car to run however putting an H22 in it is a really bad idea. Either go with a B16 or a D16a1/ZC. Or buy Beno's car. Honestly I'd run the car with the stock motor in it for a while and get good at driving first. The problem with these cars is they are old and as a result good performance parts are hard to come by and when you do find them they are at a premium.
