stroker motor question
I couldn't find any information on if this question (or one like it) has been asked before when I searched the forum. I'm curious as to if I would have more torque (earlier in the rpm's?) by stroking a b16 to 89mm vs. a stock b18. The bores would basically be the same at 81mm-81.5mm if I bore over. Also wondering if the stock sleeves could handle the stress of the stroke pushing against the cylinder walls. (I apologize if that seems like a noob question.)
My plans are to build up a motor to learn, not to see how far the motor can redline. I don't care about what I run in the quarter and I'm perfectly fine not being the fastest car out on the roads. I have an option to buy a b16a2 for cheap so that's why I'm asking about this engine and not another.

so what exactly are you doing??? using a different crank/rods, bigger pistons?
are you stroking the b16 to 89?
if so then the bores would be different?

Yes a different assembly of crank, rods and pistons. The stroke of the b16 crank would be 89mm so I would get a displacement of ~1.8L. The cylinder bores would only be different by .5mm if I bored it (when I bring in the block to get cleaned, pressure checked and deck honed); otherwise I might be keeping the stock 81mm bores.
from what i can tell, depending on the piston, the compression ration for the 2 would be about the same... so IMO the b18 would still have more torque
really the best way to increase torque in a b16 is a turbo. not very many NA b16s out there

You forget that the B16a has a shorter deck height than the B16b/b18c block. You wouldn't be able to use the 89mm crank in the b16a block without using custom pistons.
That's really helpful then. Thanks. It's not really in my interest to get all the way into custom pistons so I'll try another route and maybe just the buy the b16a2 to learn on instead. OORed SiR Iv'e got a question for you, how do like the b18c5 in your'e EM1? Is it sufficient enough for daily driving and has it given you any problems? I was greatly considering biting the bullet and just buying one since it's an all around fantastic motor.

I love the engine. I think it's what every EM1 should have come with and it makes plenty of power realistically. If I was doing it all over again I probably would have installed a built B20 but it's not because I find my current motor lacking, it's because I never say no to more power

Thanks for your input! Iv'e wanted to go that route for the past year but the price is the only thing that scares me away. That motor is definetely beyond dependable and the gearing is a match made in heaven, along with the stock lsd (which living in MN during winter that's a must). I think I'll just save up the few extra and do that. It'll make me happier overall than building up the b16 and always be constantly worrying about it. Thanks again

too much trouble to go thru to do a 89mm crank in a b16 block and shorter rods or custom compression height ... for that just go withthe b18a/b as its more cost effective. in theory to answer your question, yes a shorter rod motor with crappy rod stroke ratio (b16 block with 89mm crank) would build more torque earlier n the rpm band but will also lose hp on top end.
